Pietta .36 Cal Remington

I am looking for a cylinder for a Pietta 36 cal Remington. I find them for .44, but a .36 is elusive. My only source that I know of is "flea-bay". When I find one can it "pop" right in or will it need to be fitted? I may also need a new "hand". I can not determine without a cylinder. The gun came with a useless 38 caliber cylinder that had been converted to center fire. It did not fit at all and has been discarded.

Sometimes the conversions don't drop right in, they need to be fitted. A factory cylinder should drop right in. Here's one from cabelas: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Piett...er%26CQ_st%3Db

Thanks for the input, that was easy. And, found out the pistol is a Pietta New Army (Remington style). Cabela's no longer carries the complete New Army in .36 but still has cylinders available. I also have a .44 Remington style on hand complete with two cylinders, one stainless. It is not a Pietta, it is a Navy Arms (Uberti?). What propellant do you find works best? I have some real black powder and Pyrodex on hand.

The .36 is the navy model, not the army model. Either one works but you'll probably like the real black best. Pyrodex isn't nearly as corrosive as a lot of folks claim so give it a try.

Both real black powder and Pyrodex will work well, I use mostly Pyrodex and some Triple Seven because I can't find any real black powder around where I live. If I could find the real stuff and it was reasonably priced, I would use that.

Hawg, that is what confused me. Both of guns in question are Remington style with the cylinder cross strap. My Colt boxed set (un-fired and never will be)are the .36 Navies. I prefer the Remington style. I have used Pyrodex on occasion and for me it needed an immediate clean up after firing.

.44 is army caliber, .36 is navy caliber no matter who made the gun.

Never use pyrodex even if you can get it on clearance for $9 at Walmart like I did today.

I only use Pyrodex RS, and pretty much only use it for shotgun shells. Works a bit better than my homemade powder. Just can't beat clearance prices after the holidays and muzzle stuffer season. Stock up now.

Just curious on why you threw away the cartridge cylinder. It by itself is worth more than the gun itself. Sounds like it just needed to fitted. By the way could you point out the garbage can you threw it in?

G/G: not to worry, it was NOT the caliber conversion that allows brass case ammo to be fitted in a B/P cylinder. It was just a cylinder, bored through. No "adapter" on the back of the cylinder. It's head space might have been measured at 5/8th's inch. Bought the pistol cheap. Have no idea what the previous owner was planning. I now use the discarded cylinder for a pencil holder on my reloading bench. It sits right next to the S&W 640 cylinder that I double-charged.

The old cylinder sounds like a Kirst gated conversion cylinder.

Yeah you may be able to buy a new back plat for that cylinder if your conversion was missing it (I would need pics to know what you actually have)....

Otherwise your hammer would have been converted/modified if it was a "true" bore through conversion.

I have a few of the 36cal Pietta cylinders..PM me if you still need one
