Browning BPS Loading Problem
Howdy,
Manual states four in magazine (2 3/4") and one in chamber. I can only get three in magazine. Is manual wrong, shotgun defective, or owner defective? Thanks for help. |

It probably has a mag tube plug in it to limit the capacity. Just take it out so you can get the full capacity the shotgun offers. Keep the plug in case you to go hunting with it. It should be a dowel, plastic rod or something that is limiting space.

If it has a plug you shouldn't be able to put 3 in the mag, only 2. 3 will get you a ticket on migratory birds.

Are you sure you're not trying to put 3" shells into it - 2 3/4" shells unfired measure about 2 1/4" - 3" shells unfired measure about 2 1/2" ....

Yes shells measure 2 1/4".
From manual... T H R E E S H O T A D A P T E R / M A G A Z I N E C A PA C I T Y The BPS shotgun, in all gauges, is delivered with the magazine three shot adapter (plug) installed in the magazine, limiting magazine capacity to two shells in compliance with federal migratory bird regulations. If you do not wish to be limited to three shots — when it is not required by law — you can remove (or reinstall) the three shot adapter (plug) as follows: ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE SAFETY GLASSES DURING THIS OPERATION. 1 First, make certain the “safety” is in the “on safe” position and the gun is totally unloaded. CHECK THE MAGAZINE, FEED MECHANISM AND CHAMBER TO BE SURE THEY DO NOT CONTAIN ANY SHELLS. 2 Unscrew the magazine cap and remove it. 3 The magazine three shot adapter lays on top of the magazine spring retainer located in the forward end of the magazine tube and is only held in the magazine tube by the magazine cap. Simply pull the three shot adapter out of the magazine tube with your fingers to remove (Figure 7). (You may also hold the shotgun upside down to make it slide out.) 4 Reinstall the magazine cap. With the magazine adapter removed, the BPS pump shotgun has a total capacity of five 23⁄4" loads (four in the magazine and one in the chamber), and a total capacity of four 3" or 31⁄2" magnum shells (three in the magazine and one in the chamber). Magazine capacity with the three shot adapter installed is two 23⁄4", 3"or 31⁄2" shells. Last edited by mrflusher; November 17, 2008 at 05:35 PM. |

You got me - all of my BPS's will hold 4 in the mag with the plug out / so I don't know what to tell you.
I suppose there could be something blocking it - but I'm sure you checked the inside of the mag .... I can only suggest you go back to the dealer you bought it from if its a new gun / maybe check another BPS in your area or in stock at your dealer / and see if they've got something screwed up in the installation or something. Maybe a gunsmith in your area can look at it quickly and see something ... |

I fired about two hundred rounds through shotgun with plug in. The recoil forced retainer back in magazine and led to short shell situation.

You should have took the mag cap off and investigated the problem before you posted.
