My 4" Model 57 .41 mag with any 220 gr bullet using a hot load of H110. It may not be the biggest baddest gun out there, but it got my attention. Funny thing is, even shooting it fairly quickly in DA it's pretty manageable out to ten yds. This same round in my 6" off bags at a hundred yds is fairly accurate considering my eyesight and using iron sights. I can usually put about 50% of my shots into a 2'x2' square target.

Bad, Badder, Baddest
My S&W 360PD 357 Mag 12 oz airweight is peppy with magnum loads. My 2.75" S&W 460 Mag in this video is a handful with these 300 grain 454 Casualls, but,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQ10KIdDRwo my 45 ACP DoubleTap derringer is my first and second place recoil champ when firing 230 grain ball ammo. The normal recoil from a .45 ACP in an all metal gun (no rubber grip) is very stout however my DoubleTap once fired both chambers at the same time. This problem has happened to others and one large Florida gun shop stopped selling DoubleTap Derringers because of this problem. |

Most painful 360 PD with magnums.
Stiffest recoil S&W 500 4 " BBL with underwood's.

I put a large hogue on my sp101 and even with the hottest loads the hogues and a pair of mechanic make the recoil impulse feel pretty nominal. For handguns my hardest was definitely a 50 ae desert eagle. The blast at the indoor range, combined with the intense recoil and gargantuan reciprocating mass was incredible. You really felt the slide move.
My hardest all time would be a 50 from a guys AR Frankenstein build. I think he broke his cheap glass on the first shot because my impacts weren't even inside the scope FOV at 50yds but it was soooooo fun anyways. Each shot pushed me back about 6 inches even though I was prone... he had a 458 dotcom he let me try too. Always share your best toys guys, I remember that gentleman fondly to this day and always will. |

I've shot a few over the years that would compete for most recoil. But most were so long ago I really hate to rate them.
At one time it would have been one of a few .44mags. A Blackhawk, a Contender, and a Dan Wesson that I own. Then there was an old friends .357max and his XP 100 he had rechambered or re-barreled into .284Win for the long range portion of the Masters match. The XP had a nasty! hot spot on the grip for my hand. Then there was another XP 100 type in 7mm-08 but it had a nice muzzle brake so, while stout, it wasn't really the worst. Also built for the Masters. Lastly there was the .45Win Mag in that oversized 1911 built for it. Most recently was the Ruger LCP Custom the day my arthritic bird fingers were acting up. |

When I was young, I bought a used Contender for good price. It was an early one with a four digit serial number. It had the early 10” octagonal barrel, which was really light, chambered in 44 Mag.
It also had the early wood “saw handle” grip. I put about 50 rounds of full power Magnum ammo, both 180gn and 240gn one day. The result was my hand feeling like I had been barehand catching fast balls all day.

Long funny story, but long- so I will skip it.
Shot a Freedom Arms chambered in .454Casull [sp?]. I am somewhat used to strong .44mag. I was relatively accurate with it- 5 rounds in a 3" palm shape at 7-10 yards. But I didn't find it pleasant. Stout .44mag is my upper limit for pleasure- and I don't handgun hunt, so find no need for more. |

.357's and .44's don't really seem to bother me but the nastiest little gun to shoot is a blow back operated .380

Me too
I too have an early Contender, it really needs a Hogue grip, the original wood is nice to look at, not nice to shoot.
The uncomfortable pistol I shoot regularly is my gen 1 LCP. I force myself to put a magazine through it at the range once a month. One of those, I don't want to do this, I need to do this. My hand is sore for 2-3 days. The LCP is snappy.

...a Scandium 629 Night Guard with full house .44 mags. Like trying to hold on to the leg of a kickin' mule.

.500 S&W with 440gr. Corbons. It sucked the air out of my lungs and beat my face to death with flapping skin. God it felt good.

My Ruger SRH in 480 has a stout recoil, but it is manageable. I would have to say that a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 magnum I shot whipped harder. It may be that I was not holding it correctly as at the time I was fairly new to shooting and did not know how much recoil to expect.

Ruger LCR .357.
After six rounds, I commented, "It can't be much more objectionable for someone on the receiving end."

Ruger Super Blackhawk, with the stock factory grips.
A switch to Pachmayr grips made a big difference. Or wait. Maybe a Kel-Tec, P-11, 9mm. That thing would leave my arm tingling for a couple of days after 50 rounds. There was about 20 years between the two.

Heizer Defense makes single shot pocket pistols in .45LC/.410, 7.62x39, and .223. These weigh ~23 oz. Has anyone ever shot one of these?

P-11
The P-11 is a very snappy little handful.
I found the width of the little guy helps mitigate the recoil. I'd much rather shoot the P-11 vs. the Gen. 1 LCP I carry now. The issue I had was that pesky width. For me the P-11 did not carry any better than my G-19.
