I have a 7.62x39 AR that has a Colt barrel and bolt. I bought it used about 15 years ago and have shot nothing but cheap steel case Wolf, Tula, Barnual, Golden Tiger, etc. It has never seen a brass case since I've owned it.
Aside from finding reliable mags (I have just two USA Franken mags and they work flawlessly), I have never had a problem with it and have not seen any abnormal wear. I also shoot steel case Tula in my 5.56 AR15s fairly often (though not exclusively). In my opinion and experience, the worries about steel case ruining your delicate rifles are overblown.
