1805 Harpers Ferry pistol

Just got a 1805 Harpers Ferry pistol (Italian import) in .58 cal. Have 3 F black powder, .57" balls, shooting patches, & flint. What's a safe starting load in grains? I've been shooting my .50 cal. Hawkin (percussion) for years and my Brown Bess since the 70's. My 1st time with a .58 cal pistol.

The Pedersoli loading manual lists the Harpers Ferry loads as:

Min. powder charge - 25 grains
Max. powder charge - 40 grains

.575 round ball
.010 patch

Yes, then use a thicker patch such as .015.

Buy a copy of Lyman's BP Handbook and Reloading Guide. $24.50 directly from Lyman. Or $19.99 from Midway.
Keep in mind that BP is loaded in grains by Volume not mass like smokeless powder.
"...Italian import..." Most of 'em are. There a brand on it? Most commercial balls are .570". However, since it came with patches, I'd be guessing(very much so) it needs 'em.
