Slug Accuracy Out To 100 Yards?

Quite simply, when using your standard smoothbore shotgun, how accurate are slugs out to 100 yards or so?

Less than 5" ETE, best one shoots average of 4 1/4" ETE. 870s, no gadgets, peep sights.

Practical field accuracy with Remington LEO Managed Recoil slugs is about 10" at 110 yards(100 meters) for any number of shots in my Robar 870 with a IC choke. My Benelli Tactical shaves this a bit , my other guns aren't as good. I have used sabots in a Hastings rifled barrel in a Rem 1100 which would group 4-5" at 100yards - OFF A BENCHREST. Since I don't deer hunt with a shot gun, 1oz flat nosed lead at 1200fps is plenty enough for me with 2" groups at 25 yards and less than 10" groups at 100yards. Rottweil Breneke slugs are about as accurate in the Robar 870- but are brutal recoil wise for extended firing-good for Bear and trucks though!

Yup, Edge To Edge. Better way to evaluate slug effects than Center To Center.

100 yards is the standard, but a better criteria may be adding ten yards to your average shot opp and shooting groups there.

Over the last decade, average distance for me on maybe 20 deer has been about 32 yards.

Measure edge-to-edge them subtract one (slug) diameter and you will have your center-to-center group.

That is measuring outside edge to outside edge, then subtracting the diameter. It wasn't said and no doubt somebody would get it wrong.

I can shoot 8" groups with my REM 870 (18" barrel) at 100 yards, but I don't think the lack of accuracy is the gun, but the shooter and sights. It is a little tough placing a single front bead sight on the exact same spot each time when the bead is visually huge compared to the target at 100 yards.

Speaking of... One of the manufacturers reportedly came out with a new load for the foster type slug. As I understand it, essentially a nylon ball has been inserted into the base of the slug supposedly to help support and center the slug in the bore. Accuracy is reported to be vastly improved. Not as accurate as sabbots but a much needed improvement.

I can keep to 5" at about 60 yds with an 18" barrel and a bead only. I've tried a few at 100 with the long barrel with good success but don't have any activities that require that range with slugs.

Start at 25 and put 5 on a target and just keep moving it back until you can no longer keep 5 on it with consistency. Then you'll know your max effective range with slugs. Practice.

Try different slugs..........

Every shotgun, regardless of smoothbore or fully rifled will shoot more or less accurately depending on configuration. 2 3/4" versus 3", handloaded and/or factory. Find the one that shoots the best for you.

Try www.DixieSlugs.com

James is the former VP of the S&W Ammo company and he manufactures, in my opinion, the finest 12ga slugs I've ever shot. I am a full time police officer and "his" slugs are in my duty 870 everyday. Try them, you won't be disappointed.

Dakotashooter2...

This might be what you were referring to: Federal has a new slug out called the Trueball employing "a plastic wad and ball that improves accuracy by assuring that the slug is aligned with the bore as it leaves the chamber..."

50 yards from a 12 gauge, 28" barrel: 2.73"

436.6 grain slug travelling at approx. 1600fps.

Be trying some out as soon as I can purchase them locally.

slugs accuracy

I have a Winchester 1200 that Hans Vang did his magic to the barrel, (the Vang Comp System), and I can consistently keep five shots in a 3 1/2" circle at 100 yards. I get the best groups with the Winchester Supreme Hi-Impact ammo. Pretty pricey but accurate as heck.

My 590A1 20" barrel will put three inside 3" at 60 yds without any trouble. Never tried more than that. I keep meaning to try it at 100, but never remember to take with me when going out to the long range.

Slugs are for close in work where I hunt. I have never shot a deer with a slug at any range past 25 yards.

My old 870Wingmaster with a new factory rifle sight barrel will shoot 5 slugs (Brenneke) into a 4 or 5 inch circle all day. Some times it shoots better, but then again, sometimes groups spread out more.

I use a rifle at those ranges.

I have 2 old Ithaca Deerslayers, one in 12 and 1 in 20 gauge. Around here Ithaca was / is the gun to buy for slugs. They used a specially bored barrel just for slugs and my 12 gauge will shoot some slugs into 3 inches, more or less. the 20 is somewhat more accurate for me. It really depends on the gun, sights and loads. I experiment with the loads, installed a 1.5 to 5 X scope on mine and it performs well. The most important single item is going to be the sights. a bead just ain't gonna do it. Even the cheapest of sights are better than just a bead for sighting. I also have an Ithaca Deerslayer II with a rifled barrel and it will give me cloverleafs most of the time at 100 yds.

For my Sheriff's Office, we had to hit center of mass on a standard B-27 target at 100 yds. With a Mossberg 500 and peep sights, you need to hold at the top of the head...

Thank You HiVelocity! I tried at one time to discuss what Dixie Slugs was trying to do with modern slugs for both smoothbore and rifled barrels. Some members here jumped my case saying all I was doing was advertising......oh well!
We have now firishing having our all new 20 ga/bore 3" Xterminator II tested. We have a .620"-500 gr. 25bhn slug/bullet at 1450'/" for rifled barrels. We should be shipping in about 4/6 weeks..........James Gates@Dixie Slugs
