Most popular ammo cal. during shortage?
During the last year or two, which caliber of ammo has been more available?
In an effort to maintain an arsenal that is shortage resistant, im curious what everyones experience has been with ammo availability. Both for HD and for plinking. |

I've always been able to find some 9mm. Last year had to look harder some weeks, but always found some at good prices.

There were always .22's at Wally World. I think everyone should have a .22. And you could always get 9mm pretty easily. Lots of surplus stuff too. I was shocked that I could get lots of 9x18 but no .380. The world is upside down!

Around here, they had .44 Mag, .22-250 and .357 Sig on the shelves constantly. 40 S&W would pop up every now and again, but was soon horded by the Wally World ammo stalkers. .22LR hardly ever graced the shelves, but the .17 caliber rimfires sat, and sat there. I have a guy across the river from me and he already had a pretty sizable amount of ammo stocked up, and 95% of what I was looking for, he had. But primers and components became pretty scarce for quite awhile.

Same here, I could always find .357 SIG and .45 GAP (FMJ and JHP) in my area. Of the "big 3" (9mm, .40S&W, .45ACP) I could find some 9mm JHP, but I might have to visit 3 stores before finding it.

Must admit that I have been 'stalking' a couple wally world's. It is almost like hitting the lottery around here if you find something that you actually want to shoot.
What you do find is usually only one or maybe two boxes. Almost always FMJ in 9mm, maybe 40 S&W and rarely .45 ACP. JHPs come around even more rarely. In revolver rounds .38 +P 125 gr JHP (WWB) and .44 240 JSP. I have been away from the shooting world for a while and can't believe the prices and lack of supply. It is simply amazing |

Fortunately, I had been buying some for a while prior, so I never ran out. But as of today, I haven't seen any Federal 550-round packs in three or so months. On the plus side, I have been reloading .45acp for the last two years or so. So my demand for .22 has diminished. |

Around my area, I could always find .40 S&W and 357 Sig. That was it. 9mm and .45 were always cleaned out, as well as .22lr, .380, .38 Special, and .357 Magnum.

+1 on the lack of 22....didn't see any at local Walmart for almost a year, Cabelas was sold out of bulk packs for 3-4 months...but usually had minimag.
Most available round here; 25ACP, 357sig or occasionally 40. But my question would be why you'd want what was obviously the least preferred of all calibers? Personally I'm not choosing calibers based on what the majority doesn't want! There's a reason they're not popular! |

I dont disagree. I have seen plenty of .357 sig over the last year or so. Here is another question.... Why doesn't anyone use .357 sig. I have no experience with it. Maybe that should be in a different thread but, lets see where it goes. |

40 S&W
Funny because I just purchased a 9mm just before the shortages started. I was back and forth between a 9 and a 40. I kept looking for 9 ammo and only found some expensive stuff but saw lots of 40's on the shelves at Walmart. I got tired of it so I purchased an XDM in 40 and have loved it. 40 S&W was everywhere, 9 not common, 45 about the same, 380 almost never. occasional 357/38 special.

I think it depends on where you shop. Some of the gun stores here have has 9mm constantly, but for a VERY hefty price. Some of the Wal*marts here have .22 no matter how much time flies they don't run out. Just today my girlfriend and I bought some American Eagle 9mm rounds, 124 grain, 50 pack, for about $11.69 a box. We bought 30 boxes. I'm going to end up getting a P22 and a Cougar .45 soon just so when one ammo runs out, I'll have other choices (only the .45 will be strictly for defense rather then target shooting).

The two stores that I was in a lot during the ammo shortage the most - a Walmart and a local Farm supply store [decent firearm/hunting section]:
.40 S&W was more available than 9 mm and 9 mm was more available than .45 .44 magnum was always available. .357 and .38 special was generally available. .22 was always around - not necessarily the brands I liked. If you want something that is always around? .44 mag or .22. But - I would go with a .40 or 9mm. |

There is an absolute surplus of factory new .40S&W everywhere I look around here.

9mm
My hometown Walmart was devoid of almost any ammo execpt .357 sig and .44 magnum for months. Then one day about 3 months ago I walked up to the gun counter and boom! The shelves were chock full of Federal 9mm 124gr JHP. I bought the six box limit and came back the next day for six more and there was still plenty left. Not too long after that 9mm WWB and Remington UMC started showing up. They now have just about anything you want including .380. I like the price of the Federal 9mm at $9.67 per 50 rd box. .40 SW is $11.67 and .45 ACP is $14.67.

.22 shorts and .22 shot shells were all I saw for the longest time. I felt smart having a .22 revolver.

My employer gives us safety points redeemable in a catalog. The fav item for most of us is Cabela's gift cards and I have about $300 worth coming. Ammo is on the top of my purchase list, all 9mm, place my order and wait. Meantime, I check out the one WW in our area whenever I get the chance. Usually have Rem mega-pack 9mm about half the time.

44 Mag - always available.
40 S&W most available auto round. 45 ACP second most available. 9mm still not regularly available, but at least starting to show up more than once every other month. 38 special pops up at Wal-Mart every few months. 357 Mag - haven't seen it on the shelf at Wal-Mart in a year at least. See some premium stuff at other sporting goods stores. |

40S&W and 357SIG both seemed to still be plentiful even when things were real bad last year. As far as 9mm, it seems easier to order online and take advantage of the fact that it's a popular cartridge all over the world.
