first time today!

well, can't wait to try her out today. my first time firing my new pietta remington 1858.

i loaded her up with 25 grains fffg, and a .454 lead ball, which carved a nice neat ring and went in easier than i'd imagined.

the ball come to within 5/16 to the top of the chamber, hope thats not too deep, if so i might try some filler next time.

topped the ball off with somne crisco, and will wait till i get to the range to snap on the remington #11's, which seem to fit snugly and with a little jibe to the right fall right off the nipples.

i blew off 12 caps in my backyard to clear off the nipples as my contribution towards the annual 4th of july neighborhood weekend bombardment.

trigger is a heck of a lot lighter than my glock. i like it.

pistol locks up pretty tight with the just the slightest movement. chambers are all alighned with barrel, sights are straight, etc, etc...the only blemish is some cosmetic scratches on the side of the plunger, not too big of a deal, especially if she shoots straight.

all in all, i'm very happy and can't wait to get to the range and give her a try out.

let ya' all know how it goes when i get back, and by the way i think i built the ugliest pistol stand of all time, hey, but it worked!

I love blackpowder!

the pistol shot great. 24 rounds without a single problem.

no binding. shoots to point of aim. using crisco at the front of the ball wasn't to bad of a mess. just have to keep a few rags handy.

had 3 or 4 old timers come up and ask me what make pistol that was.

first time cleanup was a bit of a hassle but i expect i'll get accustomed to it.

not enough to keep me away from shooting the darn thing that's for sure.

i learned that those little rings of lead that come off the ball when seating can gum up the works if you are not careful.

i hope this comes out alright...got to be the worst looking stand of all time.
oh well, it worked great...we will make a better one when i buy some better wood.

all in all, it was a great day, and i look forward to doing it again tomorrow.

my range is open for the fourth and i'll spend the better part of the morning shooting just the remington 1858...just want to say thanks for all the great advice and warm wishes here...cheers.

Cleanup shouldn't be a hassle. Some people like to do a complete tear down after shooting and while there's nothing wrong with that it's not necessary. I remove the grips and cylinder. The metal parts go in hot soapy water including the assembled action. I swish the action around a few times and run a couple of tight patches down the bore. I shake it out and lay it aside while I do the cylinder. Then I spray everything out with WD-40 to displace any water that's left and chase it with a good dose of Remoil. The bore and chambers get a light coat of Bore Butter and back together it goes. Once it's back together it gets a wipe down with 3n1 oil.

my first target at 25 yards benched...i was shooting left for some reason. always was a terrible pistol bench shooter. can shoot a rifle from a bench but not a pistol to save my life.

but standing at ten yards they group right in the middle.

the remington 1858 is a shooter and with the smoke and fireworks a literal blast to shoot.

hawg, thanks.

i did do the complete teardown...i'll take your advice and just try taking off the grips and cleaning the barrel and chamber.

one piece of great advice here was to coat the nipples with some anti seize before shooting...it worked like a charm because they came out easy as pie afterwards.

hey doc, your dad was a wise man...and my next gun will be a colt of course

what would be a traditional stand...two hands? i know, but i'm a klutz.

i tried it at home before making the stand and spilled the powder all over
myself 3 times

never having shot blackpowder before the experience has been a real
eyeopener. the recoil impulse is addictive and much more user friendly
than the higher pressure smokeless.

my next pistol will definitely be a single action cowboy of some kind that i
can load blackpowder in a 44 or 45 case.

went to the range today and i'm getting better with the pietta...at 10 yards i put 4 balls in almost one hole...i love this pistol.002.JPG
