Recommend an AR10

I'm going shopping for an AR 10 tomorrow.

I like the reviews/reports of the Sig 716.

I'm also looking at the DPMS.

What do you have and why do you like it?

I agree on the LMT... exceptional quality and accuracy. I have no real experience with the .308 LaRue. Something to consider... LMT actually makes the .308 lowers and uppers for a large number of premium gun makers... and built the sharpshooter rifles for the British Royal Marines.

No... I'm not a LMT salesman, but I've owned 2 and sold at least 30.

Many have the DPMS setup and are very happy with them. I've never heard anything bad about the DPMS AR's in .308 configuration.

Since ONLY ONE company makes an AR-10, your choice is limited to that one company, ArmaLite!

That is why the Sig 716 is called a Sig 716 and the DPMS is called a LR-308, NEITHER are AR-10 rifles.

If instead you are talking about AR-10 "type" or AR-10 "look-alike" rifles...

I'd avoid DPMS at any and all costs especially their bottom of the line, low grade "Sportical" models.

If not the one and only real ArmaLite AR-10 my only other choice would be the Rock River Arms LAR-8, a non AR-10.

I have owned 3. All 308s
An Armalite, a Bushmaster and a DPMS.
All were accurate and the Bushmaster was outstandingly accurate.

However I never could get any of them to fire 60 rounds without a jam. The Bushmaster and the DPMS would seldom get through 1 mag without at least one jam and sometimes 3-4.

The Armalite would go through a full mag most times, but seldom would go through 2 without a jam and it NEVER made 3 mags without a jam.

I have sold them all. I am back to my FAL. It's only capable of about 2 MOA, but I prefer 2 MOA with 100% reliability over 3/4 MOA with poor reliability.

I had a Rock river Lar8. It would shoot minute of angle with military ball(think it was hertinburger or s&b). Never had a jam, even with federal soft point. And the FN mags work great, but steer away from korean copy mags! Pure trash!

Over 700 rds with my NoveksaLite, ArmaLite lower and Noveske upper with zero problems. Back to back 20&25 round mag dumps on occasions, never a hiccup.

I have a DPMS LR308 and it has been great, except DPMS had a bad batch of mags. DPMS replaced them without a question. There was also a problem I induced (knocked the gas block loose during a match) and they were very helpful on the phone resolving the issue. Altogether more accurate and reliable than my FAL. Granted my LR308 is heavier than the FAL, but lighter models are available.

A friend of mine has one of the DPMS .308's and he has never had any problems with it. It is very accurate and I have shot it a few times. It was easy to ring steel out at 400 using a bipod.

noob question here concerning the AR10, is it the norm for pre-built rifles to go for around 1.5-2k?

If I recall the AR10 is a beefed up AR15 (The grandfather so to speak of which the AR15 rifles are modeled after in the first place), so would the field stripping and assembly pretty much be the same?

any of the brands listed here, can you rate them for known quality? (Kind of like how Stag is a good entry to the AR15 world, while being a good quality rifle among entry level AR15, it's not quite up there with colt and other manufacturers)

Much appreciated. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread.

$1500 is the average starting point for a quality rifle. All manufacturers except DPMS use 7075 forged receivers. ArmaLite uses 7175-t73 for the lower and 7175-t74 for the upper. DPMS uses a 6000 series extruded upper, it keeps the cost down. DPMS also uses a modified AR-15 size RE and buffer instead of the longer RE you would normally see in the 7.62 AR's, another cost reducing factor. The DPMS's are by most reports good shooters, mag issues seems to be their weak point and with new Pmags it's no longer a issue.

LMT has parts availability problems, early rifles had extractor issues, the new design bolt seems to cure this. Last I read LMT 7.62 parts are available to registered owners only.

7075, 7175-t73. That's a term used in metalurgy correct? I'm not extremely familiar with this, this states the strength of the metal and what it's mixed and how it's tempered if I recall (Please correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm a complete noob when it comes to understanding how different metals affect the quality of a rifle. It is heat disippation and warping of the metal parts as they heat up that can affect a rifles performance that makes certain metals more desirable in the construction of a rifle than others?

I still have much to learn.

It all depends on the price you want to pay, armalite is great, but if you are looking at some higher end ar 10 types, i will recommend the pof-usa p308. They are pretty light for an ar-10 they have about the best barrel in the business. They are extremely accurate. The barrel lasts forever, i have seen them last well over 65,000 shots, pof says a minimum of 20,000 round life on their guns. I can hit a dime at 100 yards every time, at 1000 yards i can hit a 10 inch target. They are incredibly reliable, easy to clean. One of my friends called up pof because he was unsure about cleaning, they told him to wipe down the bolt carrier group and piston assembly with a scotch brite pad. they are designed to run dry, the bolt carrier is np3 plated making it self lubricating. The piston system has no springs that can wear out, it is just the piston and oprod, nothing else. They have good customer service these days, and if you end up with a lemon, send it back, they will fix it or give you a new one. I much prefer pof to LWRC Larue LMT and so on, they make my favorite ARs. All in all if you want a durable reliable and accurate gun pof is the way to go. My p308 is as accurate as my custom remington 700, and it's more accurate than the sr25, and it costs less.

Thanx for the responses. I went to our local Academy Sports. They had four such rifles. Armalite and Bushmaster, but neither had iron sights. A Springfield M1A which I was tempted to buy.

But I went with a Sig Sauer 716. I'm ordering extra mags for it today and will wring it out a little (with the iron sights) before I select a scope. I'm leaning toward a 4X12 Leupold.

Apparently, FN is having a promotion on the FNAR. Multiple sources are listing these at $950-1000 -- well below normal pricing.
