universal shell holder extension... anything like this exist ???

I like using file trim dies that my buddy has been making for me for trimming cases, the only negitive, is that an extended shell holder is needed for each caliber... after buying 5-6 of them now... I started thinking... hmmm...

what if there was a shell holder extension, that would snap into the press, & regular shell holders would snap into the top of the extension... it would mean I didn't have to buy an extended shell holder for every caliber...

anything out there like that right now, any reason why it wouldn't work, before I have my machinist buddy build me something like that ???

I know of no such but you present a novel idea. I think I may try to find an old ram with the correct head and lathe turn such a device for myself.

talked to my buddy last night, & the extended shell holders we have will fit through the 3/4" threaded opening at the top of the press, & a normal shell holder does not, so for using a trim die on a shorter case ( like 5.7 X 28, 22 Hornet, etc. ) the shell holder needs to clear the bottom of the upper portion of the press... so a normal shell holder may just need to be trimmed to a smaller diameter to work with an extension...

thanks for the link of the one already being made...

RCBS makes some extended shell holders, I found these on Wholesale Sports' website:

Is this kind of what you're looking for?

Cheers!

"You mean like this: CH4D makes it:"

That's a conventional extended shell holder.

The idea of using a short section of upper ram is unique in that it would allow ANY conventional shell holder to work. And, if a shell holder should need to be turned down, that's no problem either.

That is a ram extender, not a shell holder.

It will fit any regular ram and accept any regular shell holder.

It does not hold shells by itself.

Oops, my bad. Taking a second look, I think you are right! Good eye.
