New Pride And Joy

These H&R 999 Sportsman’s are getting expensive in nice condition. But try finding a mint condition one with a 4 inch barrel and factory box. Plenty of 6 inches out there, but the four inches are getting super hard to find.

Very nice find! My very first handgun was an H&R 929.

Very nice indeed. You are correct about the 4 inchers being rare. I have a 6" model I bought new around 1979 I think.

Seeing these old H & R's takes me back to being a kid at hunting and fishing camps. They were the most common on the hips of the old timer's .They were ogled by us youngsters .

As a young kid, I remember looking at one at a hardware store in Plymouth NH and dreamed about having one.

I have a 6 inch made in 1935 and in much less than pristine condition but it's one of the most accurate revolvers I own.

Big Fan

I have an ancient H+R Bicycle revolver, 2 inch barrel, no hammer DAO, unusually mine is blue and very high condition. A reminder of a different time in concealed carry guns. It is an elegant little thing, I doubt it has been fired.

Very pretty, sadly, I HAD one years ago.
This is what Henry should have done for their first revolver, without any brass.

That is a beauty! I don't recall ever seeing one with a 4" barrel.

I don’t deal in H&Rs but occasional get one on trade. The most of them have been thrashed. But every now and then get one in nice shape. The 999 is for some reason in demand. I think they are sought because dad had one, uncle grandpa, etc.
I got a 6shooter model couple weeks ago as boot on a S&W deal. Whole gun has a case hardened looking finish. No doubt it will be one of first items gone at next show.

Now that’s what Henry should have made for a revolver, they wouldn’t be able to make them fast enough.

My 999 got jacked up!

Bought mine a month ago. A 6” in about the same condition. But had an incident yesterday. On the first shot it made an extra loud pop, my right forefinger hurt and smoke came out of the back of the gun. Felt like debris hit my face. Opened it and found the back of the cartridge plastered on the back and the brass was a hollow tube. The cartridges in the two adjacent chambers were collapsed and bent. Now the gun won’t cock in single action and sometimes won’t in double action. I guess some brass fragments are jamming it.

Has this happened to anyone else? What is the cause? From the loud pop maybe overloaded? Not obstructed as the bullet hit the target, but way low. Maybe a crack in the case? The hammer leaves a huge dent in the case. Would this happen if the firing pin punctured through the case?
