Barrel compatability

I have a Westernfield 12ga pump, vintage about 1964. It is mostly a Mossberg 500 (I think). I would like to buy a second barrel for it which I can cut down for S-D purposes.

Can I use just any old similar vintage Mossberg 12ga pump barrel? If not, what do I need to look for?

My crisscross list shows the Western Field 5xx series to be the Mossberg 500, so a 500 barrel should fit OK.

Jim,

After looking more closely at the markings on the gun, I find what I assume is a model number - M550A - on the bottom of the receiver housing, just forward of the tubular magazine opening. I find no other markings anywhere on the gun other than 2 3/4 CHAMBER 12 GA C-LECT-CHOKE on the barrel.

It's got the standard Mossberg "thumb" safety on the top of the receiver just in front of the butt stock.

Ya still think a standard Mossberg 500 barrel will do the job, Jim?

Thanks,

Kurt

More than likely the 500 will do the job.
Compare a 500 magazine tube to this Western Field. Do they look the same and do they takedown the same? If so then they should use the same barrel.

fal...

Everything appears to be the same as a Mossberg 500 - barrel, mag tube, stock, etc. I sure hope they are since I just bought a Mossberg 500 barrel on e-bay. We'll soon find out, won't I??

They should both have the same takedown via the knurled knob silver-soldered on the bottom of the barrel that screws into the end of the magazine tube. Also check that they both have the same ejector cutout in the breech end of the barrel.
