Magpul 40s?

Anyone run the Magpul 40 round AR-15 magazines?

If so, how do you like them? Thinking of picking some up for home defense usage if they are g2g.

Thoughts?

I have 2 of them,and they work just like 30 rounders.Funny thing is that I use 20 rounders for home defense,because they are smaller and make it easier to hide.

Eh.. they are just long enough to be a little awkward. Work fine though. I’ve looked at Surefire quadstacks, the Magpul D60 and a couple of higher capacity magazines. Basically, I haven’t found a better overall solution than just slapping another standard mag in yet.

I have 6 of the Pmag 40s. They are just slightly longer than a 30 round 7.62x39 AR mag, so I don't find them cumbersome. I do like them better than my Pmag 60, because that mag is HEAVY when loaded. The 40s run just as well as the 30 round Pmag, but I'm with Wayne in Boca. I use 20 round Pmags for home defense in an AR pistol, because of the size, and loaded weight.

The 40s are G2G

I have two of them. One for each AR. My thought were using them first then going to the 30 rounders. Both function great and even though they are a little bigger its no big deal. I have 20rd Pmags for shooting off the rest or bags. Cant beat them for the money in my opinion.

Sounds good. I was worrying they would be too big, but it seems they really aren't and people get used to them.

Colion Noir on youtube said after a while, they start to feel like 30 rounders and the 30 rounders start to seem like 20 rounders!

Never had a single hickup with Pmags, cant imagine anything less from the 40s.

Buddy of mine bought a 40 as a trial... it certainly works OK. Not a big fan of it, even though it's only marginally bigger, it does add more weight and length... and I don't really care for 30rd'ers already. I'm That Guy on the range kicking it Old Skool with the USGI 20rd'ers, and the Magpul 20's.

Each rifle can be different, only the magazine YOU buy and the rifle YOU use it in will be the determining factor. I would believe that with Magpul's reputation and the magazines being standard, not a drum, not a quadstack, that they'll work fine.

I've been thinking about this a lot too. Yes there are 50 rd 9mm Glock drums and 60 round Magpul drums, but are they a better choice than standard box magazines? They're certainly more expensive and extremely difficult to find a solution to carry them. When they run dry, what do you do with the drum, where do you put it? Drop it on the ground and get it later?

No, I think 30-40 round magazines in the AR are the best solution and the extended pistol mags are too, especially when I can buy 5 of them to 1 drum.

Especially at less than $20 each for P-40's at CTD & other retailers.

That's another point - a Surefire Quadstack or a Magpul D60 are north of $100. I can buy 10 PMAGs for that. A PMAG 40 is $20. I can carry 60 rounds for the same price, with a sub 2 second mag change on a good day.

Yeah, and it's the speed of a magazine change that defeats the purpose of a drum or quadstack mag. If it took 30 seconds to reload, I could see the benefit to a 60 or 100 round drum/magazine... but mag changes and reloads don't take that long.

The bottom line for me is when 17 rd Magpul Glock mags are going for $10, PMAG's for $20... you can buy 10 mags of each for less than you can buy 2 drums or quadstacks and you'll stay in the fight a lot longer.
