Back in the early 80's I got my Mini 14 with a factory folding stock. Loved that rifle. Accuracy was horrible. I honed the trigger and sear nice and smooth, lightened the trigger pull, mounted a scope, and worked up my handloads and it was a nice sub 2 MOA rifle all day long after that. Then when they came out with the Mini 30, same thing without the folding stock, did the same accurizing routine with the same results. I killed many deer with that rifle, all running shots under 200 yds in open country no problem. Never needed more than what the five round mag held. I've always regretted selling these two rifles, but I now have two excellent AR's in both calibers and they'll never leave me. If I could get a new Mini 30 for under $600.00 I'd get one in a heartbeat, but no way for $800.00.

Yes, I'm sick of hearing about ARs and I own several now.
Here's a group I used to post in Mini14 threads. I'll come clean and say I walked off the hundred meters, so it could be a few feet difference, more or less. Hornaday V-max 55gr... about the same with 55gr or less any premium varmint ammunition. The complete 5rd mag, lol |

What can you do? The AR is the rifle of every wannabe out there.

Already got an AR. Got more than one. My Uncle issued me more than one over the long period that I worked for him.
I reckon that I could be one of "These AR people ...", too. I still love my Mini-14. Mine's accurate and reliable. It's a great iron-sighted carbine. When that's what I want or need, I will always grab my Mini-14 even though I have an M-4. |

Nice target rickyrick. What optic did you have on the gun? My picture shows a Red Dot but I have since swapped it out for an older Burris Signature fixed 6X scope.

It is a bushnell 3-9 x 40... cheapest optic I have now, its still on the rifle. I am a little lucky, because I can still get the bolt out with the scope still mounted. I hear that some people can't, which would be a disadvantage I could see.

On the Minis? Seriously, dudenal? Couple of older ones I shot years back were inaccurate junk. Nowadays, the newer ones are maybe less inaccurate, but they're still overpriced (not including the pricey proprietary magazines), as compared to the less pricey and way more accurate "upscale" ARs. I'll get me a Mini on order and you order you a M1a out of the box with Winchester white box 100 yards, if your groups aren't 1/10th the size of mine I keep both rifles, if you can you keep both.

Why?
Because they are garbage! Look up mini-14 kabooms and you'll find out. I have personally seen two let go, one in my brothers face and the other in a friend's. If someone gave me one, I would unload it and then beat them with it. At least as a club it has some kind of use, until it breaks!

The stainless Mini 14 I owned was also incredibly inaccurate, shooting a larger group at 50yds than the M1 Carbine I sold to buy it could do at 100yds.
A friend bought a recent production Mini with the current heavier barrel. At my rifle club, where we tried it out, I was easily outshooting the Mini at 100yds with my 5.45 Saiga, and I would estimate the Mini's groups were twice what I get with my homemade AR Carbine that was built stock using random parts and a used Bushmaster upper.

They are garbage... and testament to that is the fact that nearing two million have been produced and sold since it was introduced 44 years ago in a total of five different calibers...possibly more when counting those produced for sale in and to foreign countries.

I love Mini-14 vs. AR15 threads. It's a good thing we all live many states away from each other or we might be tempted to prove how well our rifle of choice works.
But to be more serious both rifles work for their intended purpose. I am glad I have the option to own both. Different guns for different jobs. |

Thanks Targa. I like the ONE AR I own but it is not the answer to every scenario that requires a rifle. Matter of fact for me it is almost the last choice when it comes to hunting, HD or target practice.
IF there is ever another run on semi auto rifles it will be the first one on the chopping block. My mini will be buried with me. |

I have one AR that I am probably going to sell to buy a mini. I just find the mini's more appealing.

COSteve, I love the look of your mini. I might have to do one like that, but probably in a Mini 30. Better start saving my money now.
