Hmmmm kind of looks like case hardening or something along those lines.

What kind of finish is this? It looks like it was dipped or plated without removing the sight? Can't really tell from the pictures. Post more if you have them.

How does it go back together? Did you have to refit the tight parts?

Do you have plan on how this is going to turn out? I'd be interested in how it looks completed.
