Favorite 300RUM deer loads
Can anyone offer up some of thier favorite loads for the 300RUM. I'm thinking of a good hunting bullet with a flat flat tragectory capable of taking big deer at extended range.
And perhaps another more moderate load that would be good for smaller deer at limited ranges or for range practice. |

What is your idea of extended range? Generally, a lighter bullet with more velocity shoots faster and flatter up close, but you need bullet weight for the high B.C.s that limit velocity loss and wind drift at long ranges. Weight means a more arcing, less flat trajectory.

Well, around here hunting is done a lot from stands on farmland or sometimes in stands in fresh "choppings" in the woods. I have stands with views of no more than 150-175 yards and I have stands with views that are virtually unlimited.
I'm a fair shot and my stands are built with shooting positions in them to steady the rifle if they have longer views. I have had the opportunity to take shots anywhere from 400-600 yards...would I actually do it...doubtful buttttt, you never know. I like to kill a deer, DEAD, with one well placed shot, if conditions were right and I and the gun/load were up to it at the moment, it COULD happen if I had confidence in the situation. P.S. Before anyone says "Just Get Close, Be a Better Hunter" etc. - Sometimes it just isn't possible, you either take the shot you have, or you pass it by...being a better hunter means knowing when its responsible to do the latter. |
