M1 Carbine stovepiping

I took my M1 Carbine to the range today. I was shooting ball ammo I bought from the CMP.

I was getting 3 to 4 stovepipes every magazine. Empties were ejecting anywhere from straight sideways out of the action or into a pie shaped 90 degree angle from the ejection port to the muzzle.

The gas piston was clean and has about of 1/4 of free movement.

I am thinking the ejector/ejector spring might need replacing.

Any thoughts?

Rdbyrd, stovepiping in any firearm is a symptom of short cycling. It sounds like you're getting erratic pressures from the ammo you're using. I'd try a box of factory fresh first and if the problem is still there make sure there is nothing intefering with the bolt's travel like a burr, ding, dirt etc. Then I'd look at the ejector and extractor tension. I hate to mention this, but the last carbine I saw doing that broke its op rod a few shots later. It was a commercial carbine with a cast op rod (slide) and it broke off just ahead of the handle.

Best check yours for any problems.
