Winchester Model 94 Pre 64: Different Rear Sight

As a long time fan of the Pre-64 Winchester Model 94, I recently noticed a difference in the rear sight elevation slide. I'm attaching pics. One is longer with the thumb pad to the rear. The other is shorter with the thumb pad toward the front. Although my sample size is very small, it seems there might be a correlation to the decade of manufacture. Seems the longer slides came on 1950s rifles whereas the shorter ones are from the early 1960s. Why the difference?

Anyone care to chime in on this?

They're both Winchester sight elevators, earlier and later. Called A slide and B elevator. The shorter one is the newer style.
