polishing the dull area on a jeweled bolt?
I have an old Marlin MR-7 in 30-06 with a jeweled bolt which must have sat unused for a long time because the exposed portion of the bolt now has a dull appearance compared to the rest of the bolt. There is a straight line where the bright and the dulled portion meet. Is it possible to polish the entire bolt back to an even shine without ruining the jeweling or, would the bolt have to be polished and re jeweled? Thanks!

Jeweling is just cosmetic swirls polished into the metal surface with a rotating brush and polishing compound. If you polish the jeweling, it will disappear. If you want it jeweled, you will have to redo the jeweling.

Instead of using a polishing compound, use vinegar. Do not let the vinegar get on any blued parts. It will strip the blue off in a very short time.

Vinegar will stain the exposed steel. Don't use it!

Get a gun-scrub pad like this. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/974...ess-steel-wool it will clean up the bolt an wont hurt the jeweling.
