22-250 Sierra 55 gr. Spitzer Boat Tail?

I'm strongly considering using Sierra's 55 gr. Spitzer Boat Tail which has a B.C. of .250, instead of their Blitzking which is making too large exit holes and damaging the pelts? Any advise?

If large exit wounds are your problem try the 55gr HPBT #1390. They don't expand and they are more accurate.

don't use the #1345 this bullet is very thin skinned and won't hold together at 22-250 velocities.

Sierra doesn't recommend it for hunting, they suggested the Spitzer? I'm trying to come up with a round that will work for coyotes out to 400-500 yds and maybe deer up to 200 yds?

correct they don't because it doesn't expand. it will just drill straight on down the road. the SBT will expand also just not a fast as the Blitzking

That's correct. If you want ZERO exit hole and instant kills, then this may be the bullet for you. It will disintegrate, and usually not exit. If it should exit on a side profile shot, then it will be destructive, but no exit hole has been my usual result. The flat based version has worked just fine.

The #1345 55 gr is called "Blitz" and has a .237 BC. I'm looking at their #1365 55 gr. "Spitzer Boat Tail" to reach out to the 400-500 yd range and not make the big exit hole?

it has been my observation the 1345 doesn't hold together out the muzzle. at 22-250 velocities it's more like a shotgun load. it just comes unglued out the barrel. At 100 yards it has about an 18" pattern.

What do you think about their #1365 Spitzer that I mentioned above?

I have never used the #1365 but I suspect your still going to get expansion and a large exit wound. Have you tried calling Sierra?

The Sierra 53 grain MK is my favorite bullet along with the Sierra 55 grain #1390 and the Nosler 55 grain BT in the 22-250 for pelt hunting. The #1390 has a larger hollowpoint than the 53 grainer which makes it expand more easily. The Nosler is the intended replacement for the Solid Base, which was my favorite bullet until it was discontinued. IMR 4320, H380, and WW760 all work well.

You might try an FMJ to keep the bullet together.

Tom G.,
The 1365 is what I use now in the 223 Rem. I used the 1390 but the much better BC of the 1365 and better penetration caused me to switch. The 1365 will penetrate thru the coyote.
Your problem will be trying to balance penetration versus expansion from close range thru the 500 yards you stated. Don't believe you will find the perfect bullet.
At 500 yards you will get expansion with the plastic tipped bullets, at least down to 2000 fps or so. At the longer ranges the 1365 may not expand unless bone is hit, so will be a super penetrator.
At close range the plastic tips will super expand and the 1365 will penetrate both sides and cause fur damage.
I think what you should do is look at the ranges you shoot at the MOST and choose the bullet accordingly.
Just my 2 cents adjusted for inflation!

What is the twist of the rifle being used?

Mine is 1-14, it shoots the under 55 Grainers better, the Barnes 53 Gr. TSX would provide both with no pelt damage and long range accuracy. But read the info below from Barnes. The banded (solid) 45 is your best bet if your twist is 1-12 I know is shoots fine from my 1-12 .223 if you want no expansion from a Coyote load. Deadly accurate bullet better than any FMJ it's machined alloy for a "Non-Lead" 45 it's fast. I don't know about 500+ yards though. I always thought a 22-250 was too light for any Deer. Watched many get away from well placed hits with a younger friends gun. Head shots do work!

From Barnes' own website:

*A 1:12” or faster twist is recommended for 45-grain Banded Spitzer and 53-grain TSX bullets.

*A 1:10” or faster twist is recommended for 50-grain Varmint Grenade bullets.

The reason being these are longer bullets, they fly better highter BC and won't shoot in my gun very good. The 50 grainers are 40% longer than any body's 50's made! I know because I bought 100 of them for Dog rounds because the profile looks good, the box also said 1-10 twist but like the Hard-head I was sure I could shoot ANY 50 grain bullet from my 223 or the 22-250. Wrong! 24 grains of H322 and the 50's shoot in an ar-15 with a 1-9 twist like a bolt gun or better..I know it does not make sense but it's true, I watched the groups from ammo I loaded but could not shoot. At 200 yards I had no chance of beating his groups with anything. His accuracy was incredible for a Shaw heavy barreled ar-15 (DPMS)

I also killed may coyotes calling and used fishing line to fix any small holes undetected by the fur buyers. Just stitch it while the pelt is still green, I leave the flesh side out for 2 days then turn them fur side out to finish the cure, and blow dry the blood. (don't use the old lady's !) never let the blood dry or shrink the wound beyond it's stretching point.

Attached Pictures of bullets I have shot in the last month..

34 Grain "Midway" Dogtown
40 Grain Sierra SP
35 Grain V-Max
55Grain Win. FMJ
55Grain Balistic Tip Nosler
50 Grain Barnes V. Grenade (big!) 1-10 twist needed because of the length! (same length as the Sierra 85Gr.)
50 Grain Pem. Power Loc's HP Favorites!
52 Grain Speer Match Target
50 Grain Speer TNT
22LR for scale
147 Grain Winchester FMJ .308 for my 30-06 target gun "Coyote Killer."
