Op:Enduring Freedom shotgun
This picture is from Camp Rhino in Afghanistan with either the 15 MEU or the 26 MEU. Is that a Rem 870? the forearm makes me think it is, but I'm not sure. Kharn |

Yup, it's an 870. The only other shotguns the Marines use (or will use) is the Mossberg 590 and the Benelli M4. Neither have a forward stock like that.

What y'all don't know is that Dave shipped several over with the caveat that they show up in pictures for the media to drool over........
(not sure that would be my weapon of choice in that environment) Giz

$%^&*it, Giz, I told you not to tell anyone!!
Much as I like 870s, my weapon of choice in that environment would be a tweaked M-14.Long range probs demand long range solutions. |

Speaking of the Taliban, did any get the "Taliban Recruitment Office" e-mail?
Their motto: "The Few, The Fewer, The Still Fewer..." Back on topic, the shotgun would probably work better inside a cave complex.

You're right, Erick, and I recall some very dark nights in SEA where a battered 97 nearby was a great comfort. Still hung on to the 14, tho.
Finest battle rifle ever created.... |

Not only is that a Remington 870, but it is the Marine's Mark I version. I thought that the Marines would have had them updated with synthetic stocks or gotten rid of the magazine bracket/bayonet mount, but they must still have the original parts (The Mark I came out in about 1969 or 1970, and they only made around 5000 from what I have read). Thanks for posting this picture, since I like collecting pics of the Mark I. to verify its use in theaters of battle (its been everywhere since the Mayaguez incident-- got pics from Grenada, Panama, Desert Storm, just not in Somalia, but the Marine FAST teams used the folding stock police version of the 870 with extended mag tube).
