Car needs repair cant buy a new gun :(

So after working overtime and on weekends I saved up a nice chunk of change to buy a new gun. I've been wanting to buy either a Russian Makarov, a Walther PPS, or a CMP M1 Garand(service garde i belive, the $650 one). I've been having a hard time deciding which one I want to buy next because I want all three haha

So my extra checks finally come in and I find out I need full replacement of my rear brakes. $702 that could have went to a beautiful new toy goes into my car

Just venting, so now I'm bored at work, which of the three guns should I save up for next?

That is a VERY expensive rear brake job.

Look at it this way - while a gun has a very slight chance of someday saving your life, bad brakes have a very high chance of killing you or an innocent third party.

As far as the guns you mentioned, it depends on what you already have, what you want the gun for, and other subjective factors.

Objectively, if you want a rifle, a CMP Garand is generally a good bet.

But if you want a self defense handgun, both the Mak and the PPS are good guns. Not sure how expensive or available 9x18 is in your area compared to 9x19, now or in better times, but that would be a determining factor for me in your position.

Well, if you want a handgun. I will throw in a vote for the Mak. I have one which was a .380 when I bought it. I converted it back to its natural 9X18, and I love it. It was very accurate in .380, but reliability was a bit suspect (lots of FTE). The 9X18 is slightly larger in diameter and the extractor gets a better purchase on that cartridge. Reliability is now what one should expect and it is crazy accurate. My groups with it look just like my 1911 groups, and that shouldn't happen with that much reduction in sight radius. I vote for the Mak.

Why in the world would you pay $702 for a rear brake job? I've got new rotors and pads on order now (shipped yesterday) that cost me $96 per axle. $96 plus an hour of wrench time will get me new brakes. And yes, a monkey can change out a set of brakes.

Do your own brakes.

Guns don't have to cost $700, either.

Nagant revolvers cost less than the RCBS dies for them.

Lee makes dies that work (with a little DIY modification) for less than $50.

....but if you had the DIY bug, you'd do your own brakes and spend the difference on a nice Ruger sR9c....... just sayin' .........

Melkiper, unless you drive the batmobile I dont see brakes costing that. If you went to jiffy lube or sears etc and they told you it needs rotors, calipers and pads you are probably being jacked. I suggest you have a dealer or shop you can trust look at them and see if yiu really just need pads/shoes and the rotors or drums cut. If it is a normal car you can probably get everything for $150 or cheaper like Doyle did.

I dunno if there is such a thing as "U-Pull It" where the OP is at, but if there is.... a set of tools and all the information of the internetz should make this job a lot less than $700.

People seem to assume a pad change.

At the price the OP quoted, I assumed full replacement of rotors.

Used brake rotor with hub is 15 bucks at u-pull-it.

Provided they have the car you need......

They may need turned, but many shops or parts stores will do that for you (at least around here they will) for a small fee.

I do understand that local markets vary ..... and often, many eastern states are so highly regulated that doing business of anysort is very expensive ......

Without a doubt, get the CMP Service Grade Garand.

The Maks and PPS are great pistols (the Walther moreso than the Mak IMHO), but they are plentiful. When the CMP is out of Garands, it will be much more difficult to find such a nice M1 for such a reasonable price. I love my Service Grade 1944 Springfield. Some of the best gun money I've ever spent.

While I feel your pain of having something come up to take saved cash, this has devolved into a DIY VS dealership brake job...

So I am gonna close this up...

P.S. I would do my own brakes but not everyone needs to try this just as many needn't own both a dremel tool and a firearm...
