My opinion (take it for what it's worth...probably not a lot):

1) I aim my shotgun, one eye closed, using the bead (RH shooter left eye dominant...I know I should with both eyes open...everyone always ask how I can hit anything but I never have any problems).
2) I don't believe in sights on a shotgun, the bead is fine even for slugs.
3) Shooting at fast flying birds at 25 yds (75 ft) is not a problem so a person at 40 ft shouldn't be (I've never actually shot a man-size silhouette at 40 ft)
4) 100F heat and a LOT of shooting (browning auto) has never required the use of a heat shield.
5) Do you really sight in a shotugn using a bench? I've never heard of such a thing. Pick it up and put it on your shoulder it's not a sniper rifle.
