Is it a Lee shell holder? On mine you just depress the primer tray down and slide in the shell holder. Do you have pic of the shell holder?

Does your shell holder fit in your reloading press? If so you need to get a different one.

Both the Lee Autoprime XR and the Lee Ergo Prime use special shell holders. They do not use the same shell holder that fits in your press.

You need the dedicated kit. Cheap, around $10.00 for set.

Yup, the shell holders are different from the press to the auto primer.

From the description of the lee XR hand priming tool on the midway site;

Technical Information

"Special Notes:
This tool requires the use of Lee Auto Prime Shellholders (sold separately). It will not work with standard shellholders.

And also from midway for the new lee ergo hand primer;"
