First time at bat = a baseball or cricket reference of getting a hit right away without having to take many swings at the ball.
Knowing who done it = when a writer lets the reader know who the guilty one is right off the bat, oops, I mean right away early in the story.

I have a very good friend who was determined to learn to read and speak Greek.
We used to go to a local Greek restaurant so he could practice. Lots of giggles and laughing from the staff. Your English is so much better than his Greek.
