Hey guys..hope this is the right section to post this. Does any one know where I can buy a replacement bolt for a Remington 78 sportsman in .308 or to suit a Rem 700 ADL in 308 as apparently theyll fit?

The Remington Sportsman 78 is an economy version of the Remington 700 marketed from about 1980-ish until 1990-ish. Same action, same parts, same everything except finish and stock material. If you want a Remington 700 bolt, there are trainloads of them available on ebay, or you can get one from Remington (if you send them the rifle for fitting).

As I understand it, the replacement bolt needs to be fitted by a gunsmith or by Remington....correct? You can't just stuff it in there and go shooting.

It probably needs fitting. It may, or may not just slide in and work. I wouldn't shoot one until it had been checked out. Lots of bolts available for that rifle.

you may get lucky and it fits but it controls your headspace so most likely it will have to be fit.

Don't think Remington will fix something that old. No M78's made after 1987. Remington, probably has no parts.
Go here. https://www.remington.com/specialty-parts-dealers
And all bolts require fitting for headspace.
