how much powder?

I want to load 30-30 with 150 gr nosler ballistic tips using relaoder 19 powder, but alliant and nosler don't have that mix listed. Can somebody help with this? I know I can't tube feed them so I want to single shoot them. Thank you

Rl19 is very slooooowwww powder for use in .30-30.

Most of the data you'll find is for powders between roughly Rl10 and 15.

Sometimes when you can't find any data, it's because it's not a very good choice.

There are better choices- that's a slow rifle powder - think long barrelled, large capacity cases with heavy for caliber bullets .....


Rl-12,-15, IMR 3031. WIN748 and H335 are much more appropriate choices.

I load to 3 levels in the 30-30:

A) High pressure and stiff:
Savage 219, 98 Mauer, etc I have not tried it in the Ruger #1, Handi rifle, Mosin Nagant, nor Win 1885, but based on my experiments with other cartridges, they should be in that category.

B) High Pressure but stretchy:
Savage 99, Lee Enfield

C) Thin steel that looks dangerous, use book loads [42,000 psi]:
Win 94, Marlin 335


But with Re19 and 150 gr Nos Bal tip, you can only fit 29 gr, which will be ~ 25kpsi, which will be 1900 fps with a 26" barrel and 1700 fps with a 16" barrel. You might add 400 fps to those figures with a powder that does 42kpsi and fills the case, as is suggested above.

The bullet isn't your problem, it's the powder. RL12 or something close to that burn speed is about right. Any powder you can find data for, just not Rl19.

I would caution you not to use those pointy bullets in a tube magazine .... others have said that it would not set off the primer in the bullet ahead of it, but I'd think it would stand to reason that putting a rifle cartridge in thin metal tube and tapping it's primer with something pointy every time you shoot or jostle the gun would not be smart. Yeah, it's plastic pointy thing, but it's not flexible.

Landlord, those plastic pointy tips on the Nosler Ballistic tips are not capable of running in a tube mag. You might get by with loading one in the chamber and one in the tube. see attached pic.
You are better off using the Hornady Leverevolution rubber tipped bullets, but you must shorten your brass to make these function in a lever action further reducing your available powder. Varget, H4895 are a couple powders I have used successfully in my 30-30.
If your powder is not listed in any of the reloading manuals, it probably is not well suited for that caliber.

For pointy bullets in 30-30 I went to the "Contender/Encore" reloading section in my manuals. I load a lot of 30 cal. "premium" bullets for my 30-30 single shot, mostly just for fun and use "Contender" loads...
