would someone out there give this old man a WAG on price.friend wants to sell. looks new probably no more than a box of ammo fired. fake pearl grips but that doesnt matter to me.

I don't believe Colt made a stainless 1911A1 until the 80s, about 83 I believe.
So I would say the gun has a nickle finish.

As for pricing the gun there's to many variables, I would say that if you can get it bought for around $600.00 it would most likely be a good deal.

gun is stainless no doubt. serial number70SC47***. what if found said 76 but thanks for the reply.

Could the finish be satin nickel?

The book I checked seems to show the gun as a Series 70 made around 1976 and available in either a Blued or Satin Nickel finish. The value can range from $800 to $1250 depending on condition.

i have a satin nickel and it sure is a different finish. thanks for the replies if he decides to sell it and we can reach an agreement i will probably buy it. thought i was through wasnt looking for anything but it just tripped my fancy

Pardon my ignorance, but how do you tell the difference in nickel or stainless?

Nickel tends to have a slight goldish hue to it, while stainless is more silver in appearance.

There were NO stainless Colt 1911 series pistols made then. Colt didn't offer stainless Government Models until the mid 1980's.
The 70CS serial number indicates a Colt factory satin nickel finish.
The same gun in blue had a 70BS serial number.

This finish was an earlier satin finish then the later "Coltguard" finish. Colt said the finish on the 70CS was a satin nickel, but for some reason they used "SC" in the serial number, often taken to mean Satin Chrome.

A good way to tell stainless from bright or satin nickel is to compare them to something you know is stainless steel. A kitchen utensil will do.
Stainless steel has a "white" tint to the metal, nickel has a distinct "yellow" or amber tint that's very noticeable when compared to stainless.
Hard Chrome has a blue tint.

The electroless nickel finish is a slightly gold hue, as shown on the series 70 Gold Cup below. The stainless finish is more silver, as shown on the series 80 Gold Cup in the second picture.
