Obviously it is rocket science for some.
You have a rifle whose mean time between failures in service was 599 rounds. In other words, every 600 rounds, a failure will occur. That is not a good rate and does not count as something I want to stake my life upon. You are free to choose for you own life. I am not some "M14 hater" either. It is a great gun and you are correct in that you will probably NEVER be in a situation that 600 rounds between failures means a thing. It certainly means NOTHING punching holes in paper. |

I just love my M1a, it was given to me by my best friend and is, with the exception of the receiver, a completely GI rifle made by Springfield Armory company. I served when the Garand, Carbine and Thompson reigned supreme but I enjoy shooting the M1a much more than my Garands.

Some of the M1A YouTube videos are pretty good about showing the differences in the available models. I'm still leaning towards the Loaded.

There is a program going on now... buy a new M1A, get three free magazines. Saw it in American Rifleman.

Who makes the magazines?
I'm in New Yorkistan so I would have to buy the version w/o threads on the end of the barrel ... or ... move out of state. Our wonderful Governor has invited me (and thousands of others) to leave the state as we are undesirables. I'm trying to take him up on his offer.

The Magazine Promotion can be seen here.
The small print says "* 10 round magazines will be shipped to customers in states with magazine capacity restrictions". As to who if anyone manufactures the magazines for Springfield Armory? I haven't a clue and always just assumed they made them. There is a NY version for those living in NY of the "loaded rifle". Things to consider when choosing a M1A are which features the buyer wants or needs. Just as a single example the loaded version includes the NM 0.062" blade front sight but does not include the NM hooded aperture rear sight offering 0.5 MOA by rotating the hood. The NM rifles do include the NM rear sight and refer to it as Match Grade rather than the older NM 2A term. REAR SIGHT Match Grade Hooded Aperture .0595 w/ 1/2 MOA Adjustment For Both Windage and Elevation MAGAZINES 1 - 10 Round, Parkerized Steel STOCK New Walnut So again look for the features you want initially as simple things can always be added later. Being in NY should get a full length loaded M1A.
That way when you move to a free state, you can cut off the welded monstrosity and have a Scout length rifle.
