I bought a black powder pistol just so I would have something to shoot and not have to worry about running out of ammo for.funny though because I actually enjoy shooting my 1858 remington replica more than my other modern day guns.

Dan, primers are hard to find and hush hush when you do. Here is what I did to stock up. I just looked around at the mom/pop shops and then started reading the "wheres the primers" posts on varios websites and when a veteran came sounding like he had a bunch I would pm him and offer him up to 50 per 1000 and only ask for 1-2000. Don't be greedy and ask nicely you will get some. good luck.

Well I dont need AMMO, I have about 2000 9mm and about 500 .40 S&W at the moment... I would like to start reloading and cant get Primers, that is the ONLY componet that I can not get my hands on at this moment. I am wanting to reload for better Accuracy at the Range and Comp shooting.

TomFish... For starters I am not trying to be Greedy... I am looking for no more than about 2000 just to start my reloading process. I have a Lee Press coming in about a week and a half and I will not be able to load the 200-300 shells I have gathered. As I have mentioned in the past, all I want to reload for is Accuracy, I can afford... AND can find 9mm and .40 ammo, but for shooting Comp, I would prefer the Accuracy. I have also found out that as of right now, I only know of 2 places in Fresno that Sell Primers or any reloading equipment... And those places have been out for 4 months and the guy told me that he heard from CCI and Federal that it might be another 6 months before he will see another box. Apparently the manuf. are taking all that they are producing and taking them right over to the Other side of the plant to where they make the Full Factory Ammo and are putting them into their production so that they can try to catch up with Ammo demands. So that is the main reason that Primers are not showing up at retailers. Well with California being the stupid state that they are, I might not see a box a primers for about 6-8 months from now. So it is not Greedy, it is ****** off because of all the Hoarding and Stockpiling that is NOT necessary.

Reloading Supplies

I started stocking up last fall during the Primary's. Glad I did cause I have enough now for the next 4-8 years. Just bought 5000 40 cal bullits from Zero in Cullman Al., 3 weeks ago. Cash in the front door, they load your SUV out back. Good Luck to all.

It may not be solice, but you are not alone on this issure, I had to search for 4 weeks for Large Rifle primers and then could only find 3 flats (100 each) at a price 100% over what I was paying before.

Take a deep breath and don't get youself worked up over this, it will pass. Store your equipment till things get back to normal. Then you will be one of those that stock up on reloading components like all the rest of us that reload.

Your goal should be at least 6,000 primers = 2,000 Small Pistol (the ones you shoot the most), 1,000 Small Pistol Mag. (38 spl/357 mag), 1,000 Small Rifle, 1,000 Large Pistol and 1,000 Large Rifle Standard. Once you reach that, then go out and replace the ones you use every time you get down to 500 primers of any one type. That way you will have a supply on hand no matter what. Why should you purchase primers for guns you don't have? So you can trade with other reloaders or you never know when a super bargain rifle or pistol will pop up.

Good luck and shoot straight.
Jim

I haven't had squat in my area for over 20 years and the 3 that carry anything have priced everything to cover the Hazmat on the 1st 2 sales

all my friends are graf's, powder valley, Midsouth and Natchez

Hey Stevie... I dont mean to be an A**, but you are one of the guys that are the reason why new reloaders cant find any Primers... You say that you have enough for 4-8 years, That is rediculous. That is my whole complaint about this whole Primer thing. If guys like you had not gone out and bought 100,000 or a Million primers... Guess what? There would still be Primers and the Manufacturers would not be so far behind they cant catch up. The bad thing about that is... You guys that did that are now the ones on GunBroker trying to get RICH by RIPPING off those of us that were not so lucky. Wow you are the FELLOW Americans I dont want as Fellow Americans.

I am not one to try and tell anyone what they can and can not do, cause god knows I wouldnt want someone telling me I cant buy what I want... BUT I just think it is STUPID to go out and prevent the next guy from buying a couple thousand primers so he can get the benefits of Reloading.

Jim,

thank you and yes you are correct... I should not get worked up about it, but I do cause it is not right the way this whole thing went down. If guy out there had not went out and bought up 100,000 or a Million Primers the Manufs. would not be 10 Million Primers behind and there would be all kinds on the Shelves. It is just stupid to go out and do things like that. Just sucks for the little guys that are just starting out, or maybe just cant afford to buy 100,000 primers. I am just trying to reload for Accuracy and I cant even do that cause of those people that are so selfish and KNOW they will never use all they have, or even CLOSE to it. It is just BS IMHO.

Thank you Jim your words are calming and I will just Store my stuff for now, and than I will just get what I can as I can.

The assertion that everyone who bought large quantities before you and is now scalping them on Gunbroker is bogus. The vast majority are using them for their own reloading. Look at the sellers, most are gun shops or people who buy and sell regularly on the auction sites.

Your frustration should be directed in the mirror....had you not procrastinated and bought in a timely manner you'd have materials now. Most people learn from their mistakes, others are doomed to repeat them. Many of us remember primer shortages from the past and won't let ourselves get in that situation again.

On many other levels Obama agrees with you and perhaps he will instill regulation in the primer industry so all have an equal amount and those selfish people that were smart enough to buy when they could; can not take advantage of the free market society that allows the masses to be taken advantage of by the capitalist dogs.

Power to the people and down with free markets!!!:barf:

No offense, if you intend on reloading for accuracy with that Lee Press you will be disappointed with the results.
Impossible to get better results on a Lee press???
No but then it is technically possible for a Toyota Corolla to with in NASCAR just not likely.

I am not one of the hoarders.
I have just under 20K primers about what I always try to keep to be ahead of price increases and possibilities of shortages like we now have.
However, I do not agree with your entitlement attitude that the fault here is greedy people keeping deserving new reloaders from their guaranteed right to happiness and this would be a better world if those hoarders could not prevent those grasshoppers that did not prepare.

When one looks at the voting record of Obama on all things guns one would be foolish to assume he is now all 2nd amendment like and the reaction of us in this sport to new legislation, regulation and all out bans, if not real, is perceived to be real and prudent to stock up.

I guess I would be just as frustrated if I had not seen the obvious and made a modest inventory increase for what turned out to be correct (and I wished I had bought triple what I did but this has been beyond anyone's predictions).

Perhaps it is time to take responsibility for your inaction in light of the obvious and not assume those exercising their legal right to purchase legally these items from the election results before you decided you wanted in and now seem to think you are entitled.

You are not.

Pay the piper, buy at inflated prices on GB and be a man and admit you should have done your homework rather than place the blame on others that were better prepared.

Well I am sorry that I have offended PEOPLE here in this Forum... But we are still in America and I can still have my Own Personal Opinion and yes maybe I did decide to start reloading at the wrong time, and yes maybe I did start shooting Comp shooting at the wrong time. But one thing I will not back down on is the fact that OVER buying HAS led to this shortage that we are experiencing. I am not against Free Market and maybe the way I look at it a little different than the way all the Hoarders look at it, but that IS my right.

I am not trying to step on anyones toes here, maybe the reason everyone is getting on me is because I do voice my opinion and I guess if I am not allowed to do that here, than maybe the Mods should just Ban my account, but if they do for speaking freely, that just goes to show the type of people we have in American (The Land of the Free, and Amendment #1). So Wulf I am sorry if I offended you and Please do me a favor save your Political stuff for yourself. I didnt vote for the Guy in the White House so dont talk Obama this and Obama that to me, I hate Politics. I served my country undr Clinton and I know the BS that happened back then, but I couldnt say anything about it back than cause I worked for the Man.

My sentiments exactly. Post after post crying about your situation when it's nobody's problem but your own. How many primers I buy or how much powder or factory ammo I stock is my own business. I, like many others, have seen this before and stocked up- last year! It's a free country, and if something comes up for sale, it's first come, first serve. Same thing happens at an auction- high bidder wins, and if you don't show up, you don't even give yourself a chance. When you got into your 'new' hobby is irrelevant. You got into it at a very, very bad time.
I equate this to you having a new generator, the power goes out, and all the gas you had in store was a gallon for your lawnmower. You then go waving your arms angrily around the neighborhood because everyone else has a generator purring away on the gas they had the foresight to store.

If you absolutely must have primers, sack up and buy some on gunbroker, or go for a long drive and look for small gunshops that may have some stock squirreled away. Stating that those of us that purchased in quantity prior to this frenzy just to resell on gunbroker is pure BS- there are very few that did. I have a lot of components and ammo, and I don't need or want to sell it, nor do I feel bad about having more than the guy next door that has little or none, for whatever his reason.

Funny, I looked over what I had and took 18K primers to the gun show and sold them for $30.00 per thousand, cheapest in the show by far because I wanted to reduce to what I (not some noob that just got into reloading and his expert opinion is the definition of blatant ignorance) felt was the minimum I could do with and let other have some.

I do not blame anyone that over stocked up, hats off to the American free market spirit and to all the grasshoppers paying the hard working ants that prepared just quiet down and pay the inflated prices on GB and be grateful because there may be a point where those prices double or triple.

So, Dan, what do you drink? Red or white.

Dan put that whine glass down. It has obviously not matured yet!!!

You have not offended me and believe it or not I feel bad for you not being able to get some primers and do some reloading because it is great to expand the shooting hobby into being more aware of all aspects of the ammunition thing.

I do find it a bit funny how you state you have a right to your opinion under the first while telling me I don't have a right to mine as I refer to the reasoning behind what you now complain about.
I didn't say you voted for O, I said what you are proposing is inline with his socialist agenda and if you take a good look at it you will see how that is so.

You certainly have a right to your opinion.

But, we have as much a right to point out you are wrong!

you have to be creative and humble to get primers right now. Heres another tidbit. It seems natchez has large primers for cheap. Buy a few thousand of them and then Kindly ask some people if they would trade you for some small stuff. good luck. Hey I'll give you .75 on the $1 for your reloading gear if you want out?....LOL

Wow .75 on the $1 for a Brand new Lee Turret Press that has never leaded the first round. Ouch Fish you hurt me in the heart. I thought reloaders were a tight group, but I guess not if you are a NOOB as Wulf calls me. YES EVERYONE I AM A NOOB... But I bet you one thing. NOOB I may be, I am still a good hearted person and care about our Country. I served my country and never once complained. I am sorry that I have harsh feelings now. I remember a country that would yeild to thy Neighbor and help him out, not pull the chair out from under his A**.

Tiber? You live in Turlock? What kind of Reloader you using right now? Where do you shoot most the time? What are you reloading these days?

Primers

I was lucky enough to find some Winchester Large Pistol Primers this morning. It was in a little shop right across the street from the Darlington Raceway. I called him yesterday and he told me he had 4 boxes of 1000 and an open box. As luck would have it the open box had 900 in it I took them all. Winchester is not my preferred brand, but since supplies are getting slim, I figured why not. Powder is also in short demand, at least some of my favorites.

This is about the worst I've ever seen it in almost 35 years of reloading. I didn't think it was going to be as bad it seems to be. They are saying gun sales are up around 47%. With that type of influx, of course ammunition supplies will be strained. I sent an e-mail to CCI yesterday asking about demand capacity and she replied saying they are taking action to increase production. In this recession it’s too bad that the ammunition / reloading industry doesn’t gen up and put some more people to work. It’s sad to think that they would rather raise there prices due to demand than increase production.
