Differences between Mossberg 500 models?

I've got a coupla 500 receivers - One is marked 500A, and I think the other is marked 500AG or AC or something like that - Is there a reason behind this?

I believe they've altered their receivers slightly to facilitate manufacturing. 30 odd years gives you plenty of time to refine your design.
