One more step forward in Oklahoma,,,

I am so happy about this,,,

Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin signed HR 2614 into law today,,,
This will allow people with a Carry Permit to come onto K-12 parking lots with their guns.

They can not carry them on school property,,,
But they can at least leave them secured in their cars now,,,
Teachers and other employees of the Oklahoma K-12 system rejoice.

This law does not appear to offer any relief to parents who carry and who need to pick up their child/children at school. Unless the wording of the law goes well beyond what is described in the article, this new law applies only to people who will park their vehicle, exit the vehicle, and leave the firearm in the vehicle.

Does this mean that ALL parents who carry will be forced to exit their cars, even if momentarily, so as to demonstrate that they fall within the narrow focus of this law?

Hello Aquila Blanca,,,

Does this mean that ALL parents who carry will be forced to exit their cars, even if momentarily, so as to demonstrate that they fall within the narrow focus of this law?

I'm confused but will try to answer.

Before the law (which doesn't go into effect until November),,,
Employees were not allowed to drive to work with a handgun and leave it in their parked car.

Parents could drive onto school property with their handguns,,,
But then only to drop off or pick up their children,,,,
They couldn't leave the car carrying a gun,,,
They couldn't leave the gun in the car,,,
Essentially they couldn't exit the car.

If for some reason they had to go inside to pick up their kid,,,
It was illegal for them to leave their gun locked in their car.

Now employees can drive onto the school parking lot,,,
They can lock their gun up and leave it in the car.

Parents who need to go inside the school building,,,
Can leave their gun secured in their car.

Nobody can carry their gun on their person,,,
And walk into the building or around the school grounds.

I hope that clears it up.
