What can you tell me about my buddys 22 S&W
my buddy was shopping for a new 22... ( actually looking at autoloaders ) & while in the in the shop with him, I ran across a stainless 6" barrel S&W, that was chambered for 10 - 22 lr cartridges... I'm sure this gun has been discontinued & as it was used, it also came with no papers or a box...
the action was so sweet, & the price comparable to a new Ruger semi... he fell for the S&W & then bought that ( he must like it, as he hasn't given me any grief claiming I swayed him away from the bottom feeders ) so... what model ??? ( the grip is pretty small, he'd like a full sized grip is it an L frame or N frame ??? ) when did they quit making them ??? do you think one in good shape was worth the $500.00 ??? ( honestly, if he would have chosen the new Ruger, I would have been forced to put this S&W on layaway ) thoughts about the gun in general ???

With over 5000 posts to your credit, this is a joke, right?
If not, S&W 617, Still being made. L frame, and the MSRP is over $800 for a new one. Best price I have found on a new one has been around $730. The best price I've seen on used has been $600-$650. Your friend got a great gun at a good price. envy, envy, envy. http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/w...layErrorView_Y

OK... not really a joke... I'm not great with the S&W model numbers, & I was told the new ones are 9 shot, not 10... guess I didn't go wading the S&W's website looking... sorry
Yep... went to the link... & that's the gun, except the grip is only the 2 finger grip

Minor point - 617 is built on the K-frame.

Even though it is built on a K frame, that full underlug makes it feel larger. Some people like the larger feel, others don't.

I actually thought the 6 shot version was discontinued in favor of the 10 shot version. I never heard of a 9 shot version, but then again I'm into older S&Ws.... I don't care for anything post IL except for my 460.

The K-frame Model 617 is the 10-shot. The J-frame Model 63 is the 8-shot along with the lite Model 317.

I just bought a brand new 4" 617 for $650. My dealer was muttering about how much it would cost to restock it and how much the next guy would have to pay, but I guess I was not the next guy.... for once. 10 shot.

yes... 617 is stamped inside the cylinder window... but you guys here are a great source of info...
I / we were dealing with one of the hired "yes men" he local toy store has employed... him..."they discontinued that gun along time ago" me... "well not so long ago, that it still has the lock" him... all the new ones are 9 shot me... "oh ???" him... "this one just came in, we haven't had the chance to see how much to mark it up yet" me... "what frame is that ???" him..."that's an N frame, same gun as the 44 mags" me..."looks smaller than my N frame ???" it's way easier to to wade through the information / misinformation here than in the gun shop sometimes... thanks again for the info
