I ran across this little Norinco SKS today and I’m curious as to how rare the SKS Honor Guards are and how many of them are chrome slapped imitations. It’s out of my price range for a bit but I’m curious as to how to tell the difference between a cheap chromed copy and the real deal.

I've seen plenty in Chinese Army parade videos. but this is the first I've heard of them for sale in the U.S. Are you sure this isn't one that some yoyo chromed?

I can't speak for that... I was just inquiring on how to tell the real deal from a aftermarket chrome job.

The add on Gun Broker states that it was imported in 1993 and purchased from Omega in 2007. The seller states that the serial number indicates a 1964 manufacture date but it could have been chromed afterwards.

And Omega did not mark there rifles from that time frame til they got there hand slapped. Most of what they brought in were not new. And in the early 90's norinco made new Honor guard style rifles, complete with boxes, slings and a certificate of authenticity. My thought are it came from omega. But my story is just a plausable as your as neither have proof. But Omega did import several thousand, and there were new in the box rifles made for import by Norinco to the USA."

If you read the Certificate carefully, it is saying the rifle was made in the correct factory and is identical in workmanship to the genuine Guard rifles, not that it is a real Honor Guard rifle.

Kind of like a Mitchell's Mauser, it's a marketing gimmick. The poster who asked if 'some yoyo chromed it' was entirely correct. The yoyo was the manager of the factory.

Put your $700 into authentic John Wayne commemorative dishes, or Princess Diana postage stamps from the Marshall Islands, something with real value.

LOL...that makes sense. I wasn't interested in purchasing it; I was more interested if it was the real thing. Besides, if I'm going to spend that kind'a money, it's going to be on something that I wouldn't be afraid to make dirty. :P

Only 600 of these rifles were imported into the U.S. before Clinton banned 'em in 1995. Those are commercial copies made by Norinco for sale in North America.
"...asked if 'some yoyo chromed it'..." The guy working in the Norinco plant(could have been the manager) may well have been named Yo Yo. That might be Chinese for Bubba too. snicker.

Personally I like it, for the same reason I like the gold ak. My fist clue that it's not a authentic is that the receiver isn't chromed. I can easily have my sks chromed or plated at many places. But, the receiver can only be plated by a ffl/gunsmith. That limits the number of people/companies that can plate a part. Seeing as I have a Chinese sks in similar condition I may send my parts out to do the same. Kinda like it.
