Pressure question??

Some insight please into how much pressure factory 45/70 300 grain loads generate?

I know there are many specialty ammo makers that produce +P type amunition but my question is for standard stuff as would be available from Remington.

Or maybe the newer Hornady 325 grain Lever Revolution?

I ask because I've got a 45/70 on a shotgun action ( 20 ga Ruger Red Label ) and I don't want to go overboard with what I run through it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Factory ammunition never intentionally exceeds the S.A.M.M.I. maximum pressure specifications, and new guns are not normally made for anything less. There are very few pressure numbers for which the pressure determined by the copper crusher method and that determined by the piezo pressure transducer method agree, but the .45-70 is one. The number is 28,000 for both P.S.I. and C.U.P. The only exception is loading for the antique trapdoor Springfield rifles, which were intended only for black powder loads, and for which many load down to around 20,000 PSI.

Now. How do you plan to use this number? Reloading? If so, and you want something safe, try using either one of the black powder substitutes or the newer Hodgdon Trail Boss powder. Loads are available on line from www.hodgdon.com.
