MAS 36 - deal or no deal?

It looked to be in EXCELLENT condition; they wanted about 290 for it or something like that. It had the bayonet. I knew more about it than the salesman did. Is this a deal or not? (he said he'd be willing to "work with me" - I bet I can get him down to 250, 225).

They have been going up a bit lately.

I think I got mine for $225 in excellent condition 4 years ago or so. Last one I saw locally was $390 which I think is high.

Make sure it hasn't been converted to a different caliber.

If you like it I think anything below $250 is very good these days. Check gunbroker also, I'm a bit out of the current market.

Many people don't like them. However, I like it a lot and would hunt with it if it had a safety.

I've never shot one, and ammo is very scare to find in person (privi is the only kind I've found). I know I REALLY like the sights. I dunno, I wonder if I can get him to trade me for my Mosin Nagant; again, this guy really didn't know anything about old guns.

Id try to see if you can get him down to $250 on it.The Mas36s are nice rifles and accurate shooters.Like the previous poster said make sure it hasnt been converted to another caliber before you buy it.Many were converted to .308 by the importers and many people have reported problems with the converted rifles.

WOW! Glad to see those prices. I bought one from Numrich (the gun parts people) in very good to excellent condition in 2002 for the grand total, delivered to my door of

$41.95

So what is my 49/56 in the same condition worth?

Both are fun to shoot if and when you find ammo. 7.5 French Brass was available from Midway, don't know if it still is.

308 conversions are not good on either gun. The 36 is a great example of French mentality, NO SAFETY!!! They didn't load the chamber until "battle was eminent"

Definitely do not purchase if .308 or anything except 7.5mm French.

I paid $160 for an excellent MAS36 w/sling and bayo last May. I think anything around $200 is fair, more if you want it, less if you don't.

I got my Q series (post war) in arsenal refurb condition at a yard sale for $75 a couple of years ago. I already had a Golden State chop job that I got at another yard sale for $15. There are deals to be had because many people who own them don't know where to look to find ammo.
