Let the Battle Begain

The NRA has announced its moving the National High Power Rifle Championships from Camp Perry to Camp Atterbury, IN.

Why I have no idea.

By law the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) it task with conducting the National Matches and the Small Arms Firing Schools.

This has been the case since 1904 first under the DCM (Division of Civilian Marksmanship) until 1996 when operations was turned over to the civilians, thought the Army is still task with conducting the SAFS.

The CMP has invested tons of money into the Camp Perry Complex, including installing the electronic targets like those used at their Talladega Range, unquestionably the most advanced HP range in the country.

The CMPs GSM (Garand, Springfield, and Military) matches, and their Vintage Sniper Matches as of late, draw the greatest number of shooters.

Plus the CMP is task with running the EIC program and Presidents Matches.

I just don't see the reasoning of the NRA pulling out of the national matches.

To fill the void, starting in 2018 the CMP will conduct their own High Power Matches, including the long range matches, pistol matches and small bore events.

I personally see this to be the down fall of the NRA High Power Program.

I just don't understand NRA reasoning.

People will go where the action is.
When the trap championships moved from their long time home in Vandalia, Ohio, folks still showed up for them at the new venue.
USPSA championships have moved around a lot of times without loss of participation.
Heck, the US Formula 1 race has moved so many times one could get dizzy trying to follow it.
Having parallel matches at two places might actually draw more people.
Time will tell, so don't despair quite yet.
