"They say that they're not getting enough practice shooting - due to the costs involved - and they say that they have good days and bad. "
"Ammunition is hard to come by to shoot more. We should be shooting more, but we don't," said Alex. That's pretty sad.

I don't know. The greatest "Candanian" sniper of all time was a Hoosier.

A Canadian sniper from the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry tests his equipment in full camouflage as he looks through a C-3 rifle at the air base in Kandahar, Afghanistan, Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002. The precision marksmen are trained in the arts of camouflage and moving undetected in enemy territory. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...170/12wri.html Canadian soldier Major Doug Palmer (L), wearing proposed desert camouflage gear, and Warrant Officer Frank Moses (R) wearing forest green sniper camouflage at an unveiling of new military gear in Ottawa, February 7, 2002. The way things are going up here, it wouldn't surprise me that they have dark green ghillie suits for Afghanistan; one of the things that raised a stink up here before the Princess Pats were sent over is that the Canadian Forces HAVE NO DESERT CAMO. Our joke of a "Defence Minister" first tried to say this was "no big deal", and then held a conference to show how our soldiers would be perfectly safe if they covered up their jungle camos with a desert-pattern ground sheet. Laffs galore! You can bet your tuckus that if HE was expecting to get shot at in Afghanistan, it would very quickly become a very big deal indeed. Rant over.

The Canadiens may need to plant a few trees in Afghanistan if they want those BDU's to work

The picture of the latest Taliban members they captured showed the Taliban in pure white snow suits head to toe. That tells me that the Taliban are still active as snipers why else would they have on pure white snow suits with pure white boots and face covers. Still a pretty dangerous bunch over there!

I was pretty mad, like most Canadians, about the cammo thing and everything else that has slowly eroded our military's capibility, but our guys will be fine. They will and have adapted and persevered, just like they have in the past. Getting sent up the creek without a paddle is practically a tradition in Canada in relation to military operations dating back many years (you don't even want to know what got issued to our guys in WW1). They didnt just toss a brown bag over themselves like the D.M. suggested, they used their ingenuity and have changed their cammo to suit their environment.

Princess Patricia's Canadian Light infantry?
Cammo? I'm thinking something black, silky, and sheer. Victoria secret maybe.

Does anyone know what material is used on this suit?
If I had to take a guess, it's burlap jute, but I've never seen that color before. Is it undyed? The grey/green color would be perfect for my area. -Red- |

re: the pic....
That has got to be a "photo op/p.r." pic for the benefit of some clueless pencil jockey. My team wouldn't take a position where I was clearly that visable (read: _target_). squak |

ATTICUS, ''Pat's Pets'' as they have also been known are a regimental sized unit stationed in Winnipeg, Manitoba province. They have an extremely honorable military heritage. The Candian forces in WWI for example were bled white by the offensives in and around Passchendale. If anyone were to go to the town of Roland Manitoba with a population of app.200 they would see a WWI memorial with if I remember correctly the names of 33 men from that town that died in combat. Those Canadian boys are O.K.

Scarborough: Just teasing....but you've gotta love that name. Maybe we should rename the 101st Airborne for Patsy Cline (Miss Patsy's Light Para's). They'd love that.
My grandfather was an American who ran away from home,at 15 years old, to serve with the Canadian Army in WWI. He was a tough cookie, and I have no doubt that the Princess Patricia Lights are tough as well.

Thanks ATTICUS. In all honesty I was starting to foam at the mouth. I should have known that you were kidding. As far as the 101st is concerned there ain't nothing any of us can call them that the 82nd has'nt thought up yet. Regards, Scarborough

dZ,
That guy in your post really needs a haircut. I didn't know that the Canadian Military allowed such long hair. hehehe. Just kidding. That "ghillie" looks as though it may be quite useful in some environs. As for Canadians entering the fray in Afghanistan, I can tell you that these two snipers are not the first. My neighbor (Jay), a Marine currently serving in the Air Force reserves just returned for 1 week leave from Kandahar. He says that everybody and their brother is over there. Canadian, Australians, Brits, etc., etc., Jay says that place is like the old west. He says he's never seen so many guns in his life. He says everybodys packing. All this from a Desert Storm vet and former jungle warfare trainer in south/central america in the 80's. Go figure. |

If this guy is really a sniper, why in hell didn't he use camo face paint?

He's not wearing cam paint, because it was quite obviously
staged. "Hey, here comes the news crew, put on your Ghillie suit Sergeant, and try to look mean." Or maybe even, "Put Bloggins in my Ghillie suit for the pictures, I don't want my picture in the paper -- I'm a family man, not a poster boy..." Either is possible... But it was still a good article. The Canadian army needs the good publicity. Usually all the articles are 'wife-beaters and head-cases'. MikeCAN |

Is it just me, or does that barrel either look (1) awfully skinny; or (2) have one heckuva big hole in it? Seems to be a bit larger than a .30 cal...
