Firing pin on Stevens .22

I've got an old Stevens bolt action .22 Model 84. I like shooting this rifle but lately the firing pin has been falling out of the bolt. This happens of course when the bolt is open and the rifle is pointing towards the ground. Makes for interesting searching in the dirt for that little pin.

What can I do to remedy this situation?

Can't help with your question. Just wanted to say I have a Stevens "Springfield" Model 84C that was my father's and it is the most accurate rifle I have ever fired. I hope someone can be of help.

I don't recall that rifle off hand, but Savage-Stevens .22's usually used fairly long firing pins, with the front part being smaller. Usually only the rear was pinned in. They also used two piece pins; the front half had a head (like a nail) that kept it from falling out. These too broke in front of the head and the front part dropped out. Either way, it sounds like the firing pin broke and it is the front part that keeps falling out.

A firing pin can be made by a gunsmith, or try
www.gunpartscorp.com for a firing pin or the part needed.

I'd bet a buck confidently that I'd win that what Jim describes is EXACTLY what happened.

Your firing pin snapped in front of the mushroom, and you need a new one.
