I have an old Colt Commando .38 Special that I got from my grandfather a few years ago. One thing I found curious about the piece is that it is chromed. The only other Commandos I've seen or heard of were blued. The serial number is 397XX. I was wondering about the date of manufacture and if this model is a rare find (I have much trouble finding any info on it).

Say wolfman, you don't by any chance live in Ohio, do you? (Know a Wolfe in Cleveland with a Colt Commando.)

The Commandos were produced between 1942 and 1943. Around 50,000 were produced. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if the plating was done at a later date.

Bright chrome, which I suspect is the finish, requires extra work - something precluded as the guns were suppose to reach the troops ASAP. Concur with Daniel on it being chromed post-war.
