Savage M 110 trigger?

I have just gotten a pre-accutrigger Savage M 110 in 30-06.
The rifle is like new with a 3 ~ 9 scope, synthetic stock. Nice deer hunting rifle. The trigger pull is AWFUL. Heavy, creepy and stagey.
Midway offers two replacement trigger assemblys both about $100.00.
Is there a less expensive way to improve the pull without spending as much for a trigger that I did for the whole rifle? IE spring replacement, sear polishing, etc.
I'd prefer to hear from those that have already made the mistakes before I venture forth on my own path to mistakes..

Roger

I purchased a Savage 06 model 111. I've heard just tweaking a factory trigger works just as good. I'm trying to find out what tweaking means.

How much you paid for the rifle has no bearing on how much you will pay to get a good trigger in it. Buy a replacement trigger from Midway. Quick, easy, no hassles, and no accidental discharges.

The pre-Accutrigger Savages came in 3 versions.

The very earliest (1959-1965) were a nightmare but can be adjusted by the user.

The later 3 screw and even later 2 screw triggers can be tuned very nicely.

The 3 screw has a screw that controls the amount of sear engagement and they are pretty easy to adjust. The 2 screw triggers eliminate the sear engagement screw but can still be easily tuned to provide a good pull. One of my finest triggers is a worked 2 screw.

Here is a couple of links to the Savage triggers and adjustment procedures.
You may have to cut and paste these into your browser as the direct link doesn't often work with them for some reason.

This is for the 3 screw trigger adjustment.

This is for the early trigger.
