reloading .380 with 9mm dies

I was recently told that I could reload .380 with my 9mm dies if I end up w/a .380. They use the same diameter bullet, just shorter cases. Anyone try this ? or know about it? or was i fed a load of bs?

No you can't load .380 with 9MM dies. Cases are different sizes. Fed a load of BS.

That would be like trying to get Oprah to fit in Miley Cyrus' jeans using Kim Kardashian's girdle.

If you have a reloading manual (you shouldn't be reloading without one) look at the diagram of the cartridge shown on the page. It gives the dimensions of the case on there. Then look at the other case to compare. It's pretty easy to see that there is a difference.

Cases are different sizes but that's only a problem for the sizing die. If you want to be thrifty buy a .380 sizer and you can use the 9mm flare and seating die.

No, you can't. That's where it would come to a screeching halt.

The plunger on the flaring die is too long to flare the case, it will hit bottom first. Depending on the chamber the case was shot from last the resizing die would probably make it fit a 380 barrel one time.

The flaring die will be the fly in the ointment. Sufficient neck tension will be the next runner up from not getting it into the resizing die far enough from the 380 being to short.

Not necessarily. I know for a fact that it works for Hornady dies. 1) because I've done it and 2) because Hornady doesn't even make seperate expander/flaring dies for 9mm and .380 - its the same part.
