That is a bayonet lug. I suppose you could try ordering one from Mossberg or from Numrich Gun Parts or something. I believe it's welded directly to the barrel though, and you also have to have the matching magazine end cap for the gun to take the bayonet.

What if it was a self destruct button?

If you did not know what it is, why would you want to buy one? I think by the time you order the parts and have them installed by a smith you could go buy a 590.

well, I have the buget for a mav88, these 590's are expensive.

So I was looking at the 6 shot or 8 shot and liked the 8 shot but.... it was so elongated looking , it needed something to make it look more balanced.

that piece of lug breaks up the line pretty nicely,

Just get a heat sheild then, if the pipes look too long. You want a lug get a 590 it will cost less probably than a 88 plus bastardizing it.
I'm getting one of these myself (20"). Even got a 1918 brass knuckle trench knife to go up on the wall with the 590 i planned to buy (I know 590 was not WWI era, but close as I could come). But what the hell. 8 shot (so 8+1?) 20" pump, will do the same thing as an 870 or Benelli. Overlooked a shotty in my budget plan, I could afford this, put it under home insurance. Plus, 88's my lucky number.
Their persuader version is 7.00 cheaper. Bet thats a big seller LOL
