CVA's burning up some Blackhorn
This morning all Three of us went out it was cloudy and cold. Only 62* and very little wind. I decided that we should try going up to 100gr Blackhorn209 in the rifles and see how they did with the 300gr Powerbelt Platinums. Boy am i glad we did so!
All the shooting is from 100 yards. Dad with his Apex, Brothers Accura V2 With the light wind that was there, it was blowing in our face and my eyes dont do well with it and kept drying up. My Optima did okay but my vision was just to blurry to waste any more lead and powder on so i grabbed my Accura and shot 100gr Blackhorn209 with the 295gr Powerbelts. I should have stopped at 3 but i wanted to see what 5 shots did. Guess which shots were the first 3 :wall: Great day of shooting, but now its time to straighten up the supplies, wash up and enjoy the rest of the day easily.

i LOVE it! Its simply the best powder there is. I ordered a couple of the Mag spark 209 adapters for the sidelocks so we can shoot it in them as well.

Your dad and brother are too high to go hunting, but, otherwise good groups.
You are ready to slay the 8 pointer 7 days of the week! |

62 degrees in July! That's even nicer than your grouping. Which isn't too shabby either. I'm okay without your winter weather but I'd be thrilled to get a day below 90 in July.

If you all shot Powerbelts, you guys are lucky to get all three rifle's to shoot them well. A few of mine shoot them well a few don't. Course, non of mine are CVA's either.
Does anyone out there own a CVA that doesn't shoot Powerbelts well? Nice groups! Last edited by shortwave; July 26, 2010 at 05:37 AM. |

My Thompson Omega z5 likes 290 gr powerbelts and 90 or 95 grains of blackhorn 209 (depending how much I spill... :-) )
I got mediocre results from the Hornady all-copper, no skirt bullet, but it was 350 gr with 100gr of Blackhorn. I might have been flinching, though; that combo was a little thumper. |

One more thank you, for your report. I have been hearing good reports about the performance of BlackHorn-209 and even better about the WhiteHots. At this point, the only thing white that I will put down my barrel, is a patch. ..
Can you give us more detail on any fouling and clean-up? Be Safe !!! Last edited by Pahoo; August 4, 2010 at 11:20 AM. |

It shoots well no denying that.
But, as a stubborn old traditionalist who still thinks flintlocks are the only way to go, I have to wonder about these bubble wrapped things from Wal-Mart and wonder....why? Why not just use a 30-06? I know, most states allow those to extend the hunting season. Personally, I wish the game departments would just extend and/or combine the seasons so one could shoot whatever rifle he wants. I miss the old days when the muzzle loading seasons were low impact, low pressure, quiet hunts. |

I clean up with a few passes of a .50 bore snake. Mirror bright still. Quote:

When you shoot over 4,000 rounds of Powerbelts a year, add Blackhorn209 into the mix, its easy to get a CVA muzzleloader shootin good.
Clean up, Some Hoppes #9 or Blackhorn209 Solvent does the trick. If you want to make things even easier, Coat the inside of the frame with Ultra Gun Shield. The bore can be coated with Ultra bore coat. Using these 2 products, clean up is super easy, just a windex wipe and you're done. No scrubbing or anything. A matchlock shooter would say to a flintlock shooter... Why not just use a 30-06? And a funny thought just passed me! LOL, The Apex did come with an '06 barrel!

Are scopes okay in Colorado? On the powerbelts, I think about a year ago you said the main reason most folks have trouble with accuracy is because they are using TOO MUCH powder, that you are better off with a more moderate load- like 90 grains. Still true?

Its not so much accuracy but for performance/penetration, so yes still true.
That scope is on the 30-06 barrel.
