Charleston Killings
Sometimes you just can't understand what goes through an individual's head
before he takes action such as these: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crim...cle-1.2262222? I'm sure there is a special place in hell for them. BUT that will not be what now comes to the headlines as a need for Universal Background Checks for ALL weapons transfers between ALL persons -- somewhat similar to -- but even tighter than -- the law passed in Washington State.* In the Charleston case, Dylan Roof's grandfather apparently gave him the 45 auto he used for his 21st birthday just two months ago -- legal age. And the background/ATF 4473 would not have prevented him from passing that check (other than he would have simply lied on Question 12e ("Are you an unlawful user...") Even his misdemeanor arrests/detentions within the last several months would not have necessarily shown up on the State check. In other words... how would any UBC short of a CCW in-depth background investigation have stopped him? *Initiative 594, which passed with 59% of the vote in November, requires background checks for all gun sales and transfers—an expansion that includes private transactions but exempts gifts from immediate family members, antique firearms and certain temporary trades. |

The short answer is, we don't know enough.
If he's under indictment for a felony drug charge, he's disqualified from owning a firearm. If the grandmother knew that, she could be held culpable. We'll see calls for more gun control. That happens. If a new law is proposed, we can discuss that in a new thread. At the moment, there aren't really any L&CR implications, so I'm going to close this.
