6MM and the 70gr. HP

Hello all;
WARNING THIS LOAD IS WAY OVER MAX IN MY RIFLE!!!!!!!!!
I have a question for those long time rifle reloaders.
My rifle is a Remington 700 VLS 6mm Remington.
Last year I had looked up loading data from this site for the 6mm 70gr. HP.

I loaded it with VVN160 and the max load was 52.4gr.
I was using a factory crimp die on these loads and got very high pressure signs by the time I got to the 52.4 mark. On the first shot the pimer blew out and the second shot the extactor left a weld mark on the brass, I figured that was a clue so I pulled the rest of those loads.
Should I have not crimpted the brass and let the neck tension hold the bullet?
Can I crimp the lower end loads and not the upper end loads?
Where am I going wrong?

I read the thread on barrel lenghth and slow vs fast powder and thats what promped my question. Thanks in advance for your advice.

It is my unvarnished opinion you blew primers by being WAAAAY over pressure from too much foomfodder. There is NO reason that I am aware of for you to crimp those bullets. The crimp being there or not being there will not affect top end pressures like that one iota. Back off the powder ration considerably.

My first experience with the 6mm was my brother's in the Remington 788.
With an 87gr bullet you could put 3 shots into a target that could be covered with a dime, but he moved away with it years ago.

Hey Wil Terry could you give some varment pet loads for your 6mm?

I use 48gn Vihtavuori N160 with 70gn Nosler BT in my 243win, RP or Lapua case, CCI200 primer, I get slight mark on the case head of the Lapua at 48.5gn, but RP cases are OK at 49gn. I get approx 20fps less velocity in RP vs Lapua cases (3405fps RP 3425fps Lapua both at 48gn).
The Vihtavuori manual doesn't list 6mm Rem, but for 243 gives 70gn Hornady SXSP with N160, 46.1gn 3005fps, 51.2gn MAX 3451fps, Lapua cases 24in barrel.

btw Lapua factory loads use Vihtavuori powders, and are pretty hot, I have had extractor marks on the brass of their factory 100gn 243 load, especially on a summer's day.

This doesn't help with your 6mm, but you know you're near max - with REAL data from your gun, as well as book data......

I read somewhere - can't think where - that the 6mmRem has about the same powder capacity as 243AI, I've read you can get 3500fps with the 70gn out of them, but I think it's with N165.
