Every Sphinx I've seen was in near-mint condition, and there's not much to look for. Some of the full-size .40 models seem to have had problems, but I've never heard of a problem with the 9mm models.

Parts can be a problem -- and you'll have to deal directly with Sphinx in Switzerland with the older models. Sphinx cannot ship mags -- Swiss law considers a mag a 'restricted" item. Some parts are that way, too.

Most CZ factory mags will fit, as will most Mec-Gar mags, but you probably need to see if they'll fit in the mag well before you buy. (At gun show, etc.) Pro-Mags fit in my CZ Compacts, but wouldn't fit in my Sphinx Compact. (Pro-Mags for CZ compacts were a better deal than factory mags, price wise, with similar good function; about the only ProMags I recommend.)

The customer service folks at Sphinxarms can speak English, and are very helpful. Their website is www.sphinxarms.com. You can ask questions at [email protected]. My dealings with them have been limited, but they've been very helpful.

Most of the Sphinxs I've seen in the 2000 series, sell for $600 - $675, but you don't see a lot, so the price you paid may not be all that far out of line. Having one is a lot better than maybe getting one later, at a lower price.

If yours is a 2000P it is a compact, and you've got to be careful when buying magazines.

Here's a picture of mine (added later):

I have heard tremendous reviews of the Sphinx. I'd like to see one in person.

Heh "Pilate". Nice name.

If they sell for $600 - $675, then I'm not too far off. Purchase price was $730 + Taxes, which brought to about $780 and given the rarity, I think its not a bad deal.

New member. Just tuned in.
You mention your pistol is a compact. I also own 2 sphinx one being a model h and is a compact. Your picture is an exact copy of mine yet yours has a different letter symbol.
Can you help me out?
Glenn

p.s. Both of my sphinx pistols are as new with all papers, brushes and a small allen wrench for rear sight including boxes.

hoomohala,

Hello and welcome. Without photos, your Sphinxs do not exist.

I have owned the Sphinx 2000 P for just under a year now and I could not be more satisfied.

It is by far the best pistol I have shot from as far a 9mm goes.

I overpaid on the pistol but do not regret it one bit. This gun is definatly a keeper!!

Sphinx rules

I own like 5 CZ 75s, 2 Tanfoglio Race guns and a Sphinx AT 2000 S (longer slide). I've also shoot CZ Race guns and production guns like the shadow mamba. I've shot several and own some of the SIGs like the original 210 and 220. Being Swiss this is not too hard. If we put the raceguns aside the Sphinx stands out like a lighthouse from the rest. None of them will come close. Superb gun! I rather take one Sphinx than 3 CZs if offered for the same price.

Well, if the prices, NEW, are comparable to what I've seen here in the U.S., a price that is 300%-400% more than a CZ would not be out of line. Sphinx (it's got a slightly different name, now, and new owners) puts a lot more time and effort into their guns during manufacture than does CZ -- except for CZ's ISPC-type guns, which are closer in quality and fitting.

In my experience, the Sphinx guns are similar to the SIG P-210 in fit and finish, and the care taken in manufacture. (I've had some of both, but not the Sphinx race guns. I currently have a SIG P226 X-Five in .40 and hope to eventually get a CZ Tactical Sport. My budget doesn't really let me go much higher...)
