Peep sights for slugs?

Hi folks, I have been hunting deer for years with an 870 smoothbore with rifle sights and was wondering if anyone here has used "ghost ring" or peep sights for shooting slugs. I am mainly curious about whether peeps help get a quicker, more defined sight picture. Where I usually hunt the deer are up and moving quickly. I have noticed that peep sights on my Garand allow for fast sight alignment, but I can't use that for deer in Ohio. Thanks for any info. This is a great board you have here!

I've been using peeps on 870s for deer since the early 80s.My freezer can testify to their effectiveness. Still have a little meat from last year.

Peep sights are barely slower than a plain bead, and much more precise. The smaller the aperture, the more precise, but slower.

The over vaunted Ghost Ring effect is simply to use a peep sight with the aperture removed, and sight through the hole. Not quite as precise, but quite fast and effective in low light.

Part of the peep's advantage over the standard rifle sights is the greater sight radius. Sight radius with open sights on a 20" bbled slug gun is not much more than handguns. Using a peep almost doubles that.

What's an economical way of putting a peep on a rifle-sighted 870?

Look around at gun shows for old Lyman or Williams peep sights. Buy them, pay a smith to D&T your receiver, mount same.
