My first whitetail

Yesterday was opening day for rifle season here in Nebraska, and I started a hunt that I've been day dreaming about for the past 2 months. Started out pretty slow. I was going off of about three hours of sleep, because the night before I felt like an eight year-old on Christmas Eve. I got to my stand around six am, and I saw a total of 5 deer during the eleven our sit. Four does and one buck, the buck was a mule and I had a whitetail only permit. Could've taken a doe, probably would have been smart, but it was my first hunt and I was looking for a buck. This morning, instead of sitting out by the lake, myself and an older friend of mine, sat in a log pile by the river, saw more does, one buck, couldn't stalk it because he was moving faster than we could. After lunch, we went back out to some of my inlaws pasture by the lake. My unle (in-law) was trying to push something on his four-wheeler along the bottom of a really long dry creek full of thickets, evergreen, and cottonwoods. Sure enough about 50 yards away up hill popped out a nice whitetail buck running from Uncle Kyle at a full sprint. I was in the bed of the pickup resting my Browning 243 on the top of the cab. I didn't think I had a good enough of a shot to pull it off, but took a shot. He slowed up a bit but I couldn't tell if I hit him or if it was because he was juking up the hill. So, I tried again. Hit him right in the spine. He dropped, leggs in the air, and was finished. After a closer look, he probably wouldn't have made it too far, being as the first bullet went through both lungs, but none-the-less, it took two shots and stopped him in his tracks. Ended up being a 5X6, but one piont on each side is hardly a point, about 1 3/4 inch long. This was my first deer hunt, and I goota say folks, I GOT THE FEVER, and I can't wait until next year! Excellent first hunt. I tend to think most of us only wished for luck like that our first time out. That rack will look nice mounted on a board with some felt covering the bone. How's the meat if I may ask? Did you cut out the tenderloin when you got it home?

Well, since the people with me still had their limits to fill, I didn't want to bother them with teaching me how to skin and bone my own deer as well, which is what I prefer to do, so I did end up taking it down to the locker. Gettin the basic with some extras; back strap steak, roast, burgers, summer sausage, flat jerky, and some deer sticks. Mmm mmm good.

I too am growing more and more excited as Wisconsin's rifle season opens this Saturday. I have off work all next week to hunt as well. I hope to have a meat filled freezer ASAP!

You did good! Thanks for the story. I like hunting stories. I'll also be out saturday after not getting much sleep the night before. I'll probably be nodding off come noon when things warm up a bit.

Nice first buck, but in the future if you ever have any doubts about taking a shot don't do it. I have seen too many injured deer in the woods after deer season. Many die of starvation/diesease or get run down by the coyotes.

Glad it turned out ok for you and the deer (quick fast death is the best way to end a hunt). Nice looking first buck.

BUT it's not always that easy.Some years you may need even see one.Just enjoy the outdoors.

I can't believe it's been five years since I took this buck. I'm ashamed to say that this November will be the first deer hunting I do since then. It's amazing how life intervenes. Since then I've moved out of state, gotten a bachelor's degree and master's degree, gotten married, and having a child in January. I just wanna thank all you guys for your words of encouragement; it meant a lot five years ago and it does still today. I'll let you all know how this trip turns out and post pics if available. Y'all are the best!

Not sure about the rifle, but I have a gauntlet of shotguns for he or she to go through before getting receiving the 870 Rem Wingmaster that belonged to my grandpa, bought new in 73. I just had it re-blued and she's a beauty, works like new.
