vice jaws

I want to change the front sight in my M&P shield. Would these magnetic plastic jaws be any good for clamping a slide in my vice? they sell them locally

probably be fine but....

I would still put a layer or two of duct tape across it to keep sharp edges away from my slide.

in truth, a layer of cardboard with duct tape would work as well but the plastic ones are cleaner, neater etc.

Cloth or leather gives a better grip

A couple of pieces of soft wood works well, with maybe some non slip fabric.

These look good to me but ....

I made a set, out of two pieces of aluminum angle. They work well and If I had the choice of these plastic ones, I would have bought these instead. However, you need additional protection and as L2R has mentioned, I'd tape the barrel. ...

Now then, they sell some foam rubber mat material that is commonly used to line the bottom of tool trays. That is what I often use and easier to find. ..

Be Safe !!!

Lots of nice old leather belts at thrift shops.

Those will work okay but if you can find someone with a sight pusher you will be better off. M&P sight tend to be tight and hard to move with a punch.

Old belts work for most things, but if you want larger pieces:

I have a pair of those and they will work but they are a little on the squishy side. I don't use them for holding slides. Been there tried that. They don't give you a firm hold on something like a slide. Leather between the slide and the steel vice jaws works much better. You can also use a rag or cardboard or wood but leather works best. Old boots, wife's $500.00 designer purse.
